Luka Mijatovic Breaks National High School Record in 500 Freestyle
Luka Mijatovic, already a National Age Group (NAG) record-setter in multiple events, added a national high school record to his collection on Saturday. Racing at the California State Championships, the sophomore at Foothill High School repeated as champion of the 500-yard freestyle behind a time of 4:11.91. That performance bettered the previous high school record, set at 4:12.70 by Rex Maurer in 2023.
Mijatovic was widely expected to challenge the high school record in Fresno, especially since he produced an NAG mark of 4:10.96 in the 15-16 category earlier this year. His time from Saturday is the second-fastest of his career.
Through the first 100 yards in 47.36, Mijatovic was timed in 1:38.12 at the 200-yard mark. He was at 2:29.21 through 300 yards and was 3:21.01 at 400 yards.
Mijatovic will be in Indianapolis next month for the United States National Championships. The meet will be used to select the squad that will compete at this summer’s World Championships in Singapore.
Ahead of his record-breaking swim in the 500 freestyle, Mijatovic posted a career-best time on the way to victory in the 200 freestyle. In that event, Mijatovic touched the wall in 1:33.52, which was more than two seconds faster than runnerup Alex Pletcher (1:35.63).
