World Championships: Claire Weinstein Latest U.S. Scratch in 400 Free
The stomach bug that has circulated through the U.S. swim camp apparently claimed Claire Weinstein among its number on Sunday.
Weinstein scratched the women’s 400 freestyle on the opening day of the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
A stomach bug has been circulating through the U.S. team, delaying the travel of some athletes from their staging camp in Thailand and seeming to impact the performances of those in Singapore.
USA Swimming has said nothing about it short of announcing changes from the start list. That included Torri Huske skipping the 100 butterfly Sunday, though she’s expected to swim in the 400 freestyle relay. Both male distance swimmers in the 400 free missed the eight-man final, with Rex Maurer 11th in 3:46.38, three seconds slower than he was at trials, and teen Luka Mijatovic struggling to 36th. His time of 3:59.68 was nearly 14 seconds slower than he was at trials.

Weinstein entered as the fifth seed in the women’s 400 free in the preliminary heats on Sunday morning. She would’ve had a great chance to make the final and challenge for a medal, in an event that is missing meet record holder and reigning Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus. The 2024 World Champion, Erika Fairweather, was disqualified for a false start on Sunday.
Weinstein went 4:00.05 at Olympic Trials. That made her the seventh-fastest performer of all-time, with only six women having gone sub-4 minutes. Five of those swimmers are active, but only Katie Ledecky, Li Bingjie and Summer McIntosh will represent that group in the A final.
Weinstein, a Paris Olympic silver medalist in the 800 free relay, has the 200 free, 800 free and 800 freestyle relay remaining on her program in Singapore.
