Wisconsin Hires Johno Fergusson as Assistant Coach

Wisconsin on Wednesday announced the hiring of Johno Fergusson as an assistant coach to head man Jack Brown.

The South African coach was most recently the associate head coach at Southern Illinois University, where he spent six years in various capacities. He also spent four years as an assistant coach at Scottsdale Aquatic Club and was a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Arizona from 2011-14 under Eric Hansen and 2015-16 at Arizona State with Bob Bowman.

“Andrew knows exactly what it takes to compete — and win — at the highest level,” Brown said in a press release. “He’s been a force on the international stage for Team USA, and despite everything he’s accomplished, what stands out most is his love for coaching. He’s passionate about helping others grow and perform at their best. His energy and experience are going to take our diving program to the next level here in Madison.”

Fergusson began coaching in his home country at Sunday Tribune Penguins Swimming Club in Pietermaritzburg. He was there from 2005-11, coaching several leading South African swimmers as well as international swimmers from neighboring countries in southern Africa.

Fergusson is married to the former Maggie Meyer, a Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Famer who swam for the Badgers from 2008-11. Meyer was an 11-time All-American, the 2011 NCAA champion in the 200 backstroke and that year’s Big Ten Conference Women’s Swimmer of the Year.

Fergusson joins the inaugural staff for Brown, who was hired in May to replace Yuri Suguiyama.
