TYR Summer Championships, Day Three Prelims: Brooks Curry Leads Field in 100 Freestyle
Each of the first two days of the TYR Summer Championships has featured an intriguing storyline. While Van Mathias stunned with a win in the 50-meter breaststroke on the opening night of the meet, Aaron Shackell delivered a stellar performance in the 400 freestyle on the second night of action. With their performances, Mathias and Shackell should land on the American squad that will compete at next summer’s Pan Pacific Championships.
What will Day Three hold?
The third session of prelims at the William Woollett Aquatic Center will include women’s and men’s heats of the 100 freestyle, 400 individual medley, 50 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Caeleb Dressel is the headliner of the session, racing in the 50 butterfly after placing third in the 50 freestyle on Night One.
Here is an event-by-event recap of the Day Three prelims:

Men’s 50 Butterfly
Coming off a victory in the 100 butterfly, Australian Ben Armbruster dialed up a 23.10 clocking in the 50 fly to grab the top seed for the final. Armbruster will duel in the final with American-record holder Caeleb Dressel, who went 23.28 to win the second heat and earn the second seed. Aiden Hayes was third-fastest in the morning with a swim of 23.66.
Dressel is chasing a berth to Pan Pacs and will need to be faster than 23.21 during the final. If the 10-time Olympic medalist can pull that off, it would bump Michael Andrew from Pan Pacs.
