Three State Records Fall as Jesuit Sweeps Team Titles at Oregon 6A Championships

The 2019 Oregon 6A State Swimming Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Tualatin Aquatics Center in Beaverton, Ore.

Century’s Luke Thornbrue set a new Oregon state and 6A record in the 200 free, while Sunset’s Lily Gardner set a new class mark in that event as well. A trio of 6A relay records were broken, including a pair of state record-setting ones by Sunset girls and Jesuit boys.

Jesuit won their seventh team title in the past 11 seasons – and first since 2016 – with 130 points against defending champion Sunset (99). Jesuit also won their fifth-straight boys’ championship crown with a total score of 101 ahead of runner-up Central Catholic (77).

Jesuit began their winning ways as the 4×50 medley relay of Sofia Nosack (26.49), Emma Matous (30.90), Isabella Wallace (25.04) and Elise Kreutzer (23.41) opened the meet in 1:45.84.

Wallace then went on to sprint her way to a personal victory in the 100 free, touching the wall in 50.54. Nosack also powered home to a win in the 500 free with a time of 4:59.00 as the only swimmer to break five minutes.

Gardner cruised to first in the 200 free as the only swimmer in the field under the 1:50 mark, doing so in 1:48.41 for a new 6A record. Shortly after, she was back in the water to win her second gold after posting a time of 54.68 in the 100 fly.

Sunset’s Tia Lindsay won the 200 IM by two full seconds by throwing down a time of 2:00.80 in finals and also won the 100 back in 54.98. She led off her team’s winning free relay in 23.55, joining teammates Kiki Lindsay (24.54), Hannah Trainer (23.83) and Gardner (23.14) in 1:35.06. T. Lindsay (50.42), K. Lindsay (53.03), Trainer (51.52) and Gardner (50.01) also set a new overall state and 6A record in the 4×100 with a combined time of 3:24.98.

Aloha’s Kaitlyn Dobler splashed-and-dashed her way to a win in the 50 free in a quick 22.50 to win by well over a full second, although she was just shy of her own state and 6A mark of 22.35 she set last season. She also won the 100 breast in 1:00.92, again just off her own records of 59.89.

Jesuit began their quest for the team title by winning the 4×50 medley relay as Nick Simoons (24.35), Marco Nosack (26.59), Noah Duyck (23.57) and Matthias Kreutzer (21.25) combined in 1:35.76. Simons later won the 100 back in 51.64 and Nosack got his hands to the wall first in the 100 breast in 57.23.

Thornbrue set a new Oregon state and 6A record in the 200 free, throwing down a time of 1:37.27 to finish first ahead of Jesuit’s Trent Martinez (1:37.71). He also won the 500 free by five seconds – again ahead of Martinez (4:31.16) – in 4:26.04, just shy of the state and 6A mark of 4:25.21.

It was another close race in the 200 IM as only .04 separated gold and silver. Central Catholic’s Kevin Keil ultimately won in 1:50.05, slightly ahead of Tigard’s Ben Miller (1:50.09). Miller then flew to the top of the podium in 48.59 as the only swimmer to sneak under the 50-second mark.

Central Catholic’s Spencer Adrian sprinted his way to gold in the 50 free in 21.20, just ahead of West Linn’s Kevin Vu (21.24) and South Eugene’s Anzo DeGiulio (21.28). DeGiulio then won the 100 free in 45.95, two-hundredths ahead of Griffin McKean (45.96) of Mountain View.

Newburg’s Zach Jordan (21.98), Elijah Clements (21.10), Ty Patterson (21.88) and Trey Fincher (21.15) won the 4×50 free relay in 1:26.11 to break the 6A record and were just off the overall state mark of 1:26.08.

Martinez (45.93), Duyck (48.45), Kreutzer (46.59) and Nosack (46.70) secured Jesuit’s team win with a dominant performance in the 4×100 to conclude the meet. They combined in 3:07.67, setting a new Oregon state and 6A record.
