Scarlet Martin, Aurora Roghair Break Records; Ames Clinches Title at Iowa State Championships

The 2020 Iowa State Swimming & Diving Championships took place on Saturday, Nov. 14 at at the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA in Marshalltown, Iowa.

A total of four state records were broken during the meet:

Iowa City West’s Scarlet Martin – 100 fly (53.01)
Iowa City West’s Scarlet Martin – 100 back (54.14)
Iowa City West’s Aurora Roghair – 500 free (4:45.78)
Iowa City West – 4×100 free relay (3:23.73)

In 2019, Dowling Catholic ended Ames’ four-year reign. This season, however, the Little Cyclones came back with vengeance to reclaim the championship crown with a final score of 303 points ahead of Iowa City West (277.5) and Dowling Catholic (233).

The meet began in exciting fashion and proved to be the closest event of the championships. Johnston’s Abby Rastetter, Olivia Swalley, Brooklynn Kaster (26.82), and Izzy Osborne (24.22) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:46.74, only 0.03 ahead of runner-up Ames (1:46.77).

Shortly after swimming on the winning medley relay, Swalley was back in the water to win the 200 IM in a final time of 2:03.28 ahead of soon-to-be Kentucky Wildcat Annie Galvin (2:04.94) of Ames. Swalley then won the 100 breast after getting her hands to the wall in 1:04.12, while Galvin also finished second in the 100 back with a time of 55.35.

A. Roghair successfully defended her state title in the 200 free, finishing in 1:47.30 to just miss the state record of 1:47.14. The Stanford commit then went on to win the 500 free for the second-straight year in 4:45.78. Her time broke the state record of 4:47.43 set by Waukee’s Jessi Wigham during prelims. Wigham wound up second in 4:48.35.

Ames’ Meghan Donald, who recently verbally committed to NC State, splashed-and-dashed her way to a win in the 50 free, clocking in at a swift 22.99 ahead of Kentucky commit Grace Frericks (23.56) of Cedar Falls. Donald then proved her sprint prowess by also grabbing gold in the 100 free, stopping the clock in 50.63.

Martin defended her title in the 100 fly in state record-setting fashion. Her time of 53.01 lowered her own state record of 53.39 she set during prelims; she first broke the mark in 2019. The junior, who has sent her verbal pledge to Florida, also broke the 100 back state record twice in one day: her final time of 54.14 eclipsed the mark of 54.17 she set in prelims.

Iowa City West’s Ella Hochstetler (24.85), Jade Roghair (24.06), Roghair (22.88), and Martin (22.55) won the 4×50 free relay in 1:34.34. On the boards, Bettendorf senior Makayla Hughbanks dominated and grabbed gold with a final score of 505.70.

The meet concluded with a bang as Iowa City West’s J. Roghair (52.59), Olivia Taeger (52.83), A. Roghair (49.22), and Martin (49.09) won the 4×100 free relay in a combined time of 3:23.73. Their time broke the state record of 3:24.89 set by Ames in 2017.
