Punahou Women Dominate, Men Win Close Meet at Hawaii High School State Champs

Punahou High School captured a pair of Hawaii high school state swimming championships this weekend.

Women

Punahou won a number of events. Deborah Wen was dominant on the board, winning diving with 438.35 points. In the 200 medley relay the squad of Lia FosterMaddie BalishLyra Gonzalez, and Daralyn Wen touched in 1:47.19.

Chanel Ng, Balish, Gonzalez, and Sydnee Whitty combined for a 1:37.59 to win the 200 freestyle relay. Balish took a state title of her own with a 1:04.41 in the 100 breaststroke.

Foster was dominant in the 200 IM, winning the event in 2:04.35. She also won the 100 back in 56.37. Whitty went a 23.46 in the 50 freestyle to garner more first place points for Punahou. She won again with a 51.27 100 freestyle.

Maui Preparatory Academy’s Kysha Altura was a double winner, posting a 1:50.92 in the 200 freestyle and a 56.39 in the 100 butterfly. Just .01 behind her Lahainaluna’s Lexi Anderson earned silver in the 100 fly.

Seabury Hall’s Jasmine O’Brien dominated the 500 freestyle, stopping the clock in 4:55.44. That time lowered Rebecca Walton‘s 2015 state record of 4:56.29. In prelims she was .03 shy of the mark with a 4:56.32.

Punahou wrapped up the meet with a 400 freestyle relay win (3:30.53) with the team of Ng, Wen, Foster, and Whitty.

Punnahou totaled 88 points for the state title. They were followed by Hawaii Preparatory Academy (43).

Men

Maryknoll’s Albert ZhiEdmund ShiuMJ Mao, and Keenan Lee set a state record in the 200 medley relay in 1:34.46. Mao set a state record of 1:49.02 in prelims of the 200 IM. The senior held on for the win in finals with a 1:52.54. In the 100 fly Mao touched a second and a half ahead of the field with a 47.61.

Mid-Pacific Institute’s Michael Petrides topped the 200 free (1:37.46) and the 500 freestyle (4:28.91). His teammate Dawson Sloan won the 100 freestyle in 45.20, just faster than Zhi (45.47) and Punahou’s Tyler Kawakami (45.63). In the 50 freestyle Sloan’s 21.12 put him ahead of Roosevelt High School teammates Joseph Ahia (21.36) and Jun Yeub Yoon (21.54).

Kawakami, Sean KwonJake Gaughan, and Alika Naone posted a 1:25.51 to win the 200 freestyle relay for Punahou.

Iolani School senior Jack Lee raced to a 51.44 100 backstroke to take the state title in that event. Kwon finished second (52.04).

Kamehameha Schools Kapalama sophomore teammates Jaek Horner and Kanoa Sawai were first and second in the 100 breaststroke in 58.51 and 58.70. It was a tight battle behind them as Ahia (58.94) and Shiu (58.98) were third and fourth.

Joar Berglund of Hawaii Preparatory Academy scored 448 points to secure the diving title.

Punahou’s Gaughan, Kawakami, Schuyler Cole, and Naone won the 400 freestyle relay for Punahou in 3:07.66.

In the end, the men’s meet was a tighter battle with Punahou securing 44.5 points to Maryknoll’s 42 points and Mid-Pacific Institute’s 40.
