18-year-old high school senior Jakob Mumper out of Bloomington North High School in Indiana was shot and killed in an apparent murder-suicide by his father, 61-year-old Jeff Mumper, according to a report from WTHR in Indianapolis. Police believe that early Sunday inside the family’s home, the 61-year-old father shot and killed his 54-year-old wife Greta, his 26-year-old daughter Emma, and his 18-year-old son Jakob.

Jakob Mumper was a rising senior swimmer at Bloomington North High School, where he was 18th in both the 50 (21.24) & 100 freestyle (46.86) at the 2020 IHSAA state championships. Mumper helped his 200 freestyle relay team place 13th at the state meet as he anchored in a 20.76. He also anchored the 400 free relay team to finish 22nd.

Mumper’s club teammates at Indiana Swim Club paid their respects to his family:

“Even like thinking about it I’m shaking,” Kristina Paegle told WTHR.

“My stomach hasn’t stopped hurting,” Delani Fisher said. “I think it’s worse that it’s not like a natural cause.”

“We love him, and we want all of the people who really care about him and all that…we know that he has a place in their heart,” Will Renn said. “He will fly because of them.”

Jakob Mumper was coached by former Indiana swimmer and Bloomington North alum Max Irwin, who was hoping Mumper would break his school records.

“Those were my records from when I went through,” Irwin told WTHR. “So, to have coached someone who’s now better than me, that’s kind of what you really want as a coach. So, it’s a tough loss on so many levels, the athletics being one of the lesser levels for sure.”

Friends say their father, Jeffrey, had beaten prostate cancer, but was now battling pancreatic cancer.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting, according to WTHR. The Monroe County coroner is expected to perform autopsies after the Labor Day weekend.
