Oceanside Collegiate Girls, St. Joseph’s Catholic Boys Earn South Carolina 3A State Titles

Many records fell at the South Carolina 3A State Championships, which took place on October 13 at the University of South Carolina Natatorium. The Oceanside Collegiate Academy girls won the team title while St. Joseph Catholic repeated as boys’ team champion for the third-straight year.

Oceanside Collegiate began their winning ways as Kendal Chunn (26.80), Chrisman Rand (31.15), Sophia McCoy (26.68), and Caroline Hill (24.93) dominated the opening 4×50 medley relay, winning by five seconds in a new 3A record-setting time of 1:49.56. Hill (54.57), Anna Albert (56.58), Chunn (52.70), and Rand (55.76) also won the 4×100 free relay in 3:39.61 for another 3A mark.

Chunn soon after repeated as 200 IM champion, crushing the field by six seconds to demolish her own 3A record with a winning time of 2:04.83. She later defended her 100 back title, finishing in a new 3A record of 57.64 as the only swimmer in the field under one minute.

Hill later set a new 3A mark of her own in the 100 free, winning in 53.20 ahead of Christ Church’s Mollie Folk (53.74). Bishop England’s Jill Smiley successfully defended her title in the 100 fly, leading the charge in 56.93 to crush her own 3A record of 58.05.

St. John’s Mary Kate Farrell was the first of two swimmers under the two-minute barrier in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:55.01 for a new 3A mark to edge out Waccamaw’s Emma Sullivan (1:55.24). Sullivan then went on to repeat as champion in the 500 free, cruising to first in 5:09.19 while Farrell earned gold in the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.72.

Christ Church Episcopal’s Claire DePiero sprinted to first in the 50 free with a time of 24.76 as the only swimmer under the 25-second mark. DePiero (24.34), along with Folk (25.36), Karinne Everly (26.56), Kylie Larkin (24.87), anchored the winning 4×50 free relay with a combined time of 1:41.13 to eclipse the previous 3A record.

St. Joseph’s started their title quest right from the get-go as James Cline (26.20), Jack Doyle (27.81), Preston Jennings (23.92), and Silas Crosby (22.34) opened the boys’ meet with a win in the 4×50 medley relay (1:40.27). Crosby (48.55), Doyle (50.71), and Jennings (48.33) teamed up with Colin Jordan (48.55) to win the 4×100 free relay at the end of the meet in a record-setting time of 3:16.28.

Doyle then went on to win the 200 IM in 1:58.75 as the only swimmer in the race to crack the two-minute marker. Crosby led the race from start to finish to defend his title in the 500 free, breaking his own record to win by 10 seconds in a swift 4:41.69. Academic Magnet’s Charles Blanc flew to first in the 100 fly, getting his hands to the wall in 52.27 for yet another 3A record.

Christ Church Episcopal’s Nathan DePiero dominated the 200 free, winning by three seconds in a new 3A mark of 1:41.71 after placing second in the event last year. The junior earned his second gold medal of the night in the 100 free, racing to a final time of 47.25.

May River’s John Brester sprinted to the top of the podium in the 50 free, stopping the clock in a swift 21.65 for a new 3A record. He later won the 100 breast in 58.82 as the first of only two swimmers to sneak under the 60-second barrier, fast enough for another 3A mark of his own.

The 4×50 free relay title title went to Christ Church Episcopal’s Wyatt Weir (23.13), Arthur Bishop (22.50), Porter Brown (23.49), and DePiero (20.94) who took down the previous record with a new time of 1:30.06. Soon after, Bishop won the 100 back by nearly three seconds in 54.34.
