Naperville Central (Ill.) Swim Coach Resigns After Swimmer Injured During TP Tradition
Naperville Central High School head swimming coach Mike Adams has resigned from his post, following a team incident that left him on administrative leave.
According to sources, the boys team had a toilet paper night before the season for their girls team to celebrate Sectionals, a tradition that has gone on for years at Naperville Central and other area high schools. Freshman wrestling also occurred during the night and has been part of the tradition.
During the course of the evening there was a hazing incident, according to another source who wished to remain anonymous, and officials at the school placed Adams on administrative leave after Adams alerted school officials about what happened.
Adams coached the boys team for 33 years, the girls team for 13. During his tenure, the boys team won the state championship in 2002 and 2010.
Two of the top swimmers left the team at the beginning of the season, but most of the team remained intact.
Neither Adams, nor the school responded for requests for comment.
NCHS administration has hired Brian O’Dowd, a club coach for MAVS who stepped in as head coach for the boys. Krista Gensler was picked as girls head coach.

I’m embarrassed for my Naperville community and disgusted how a very good man was treated. This was pushed by a very few, weak, pathetic parents and a cowardly District Administration. #RespectCoachAdams
It’s a sad example of today’s parents. I am embarrassed for my Naperville community. Whiny, weak parents and a school district administration that caved. Disgusting how they treated a great coach and a very good human being.
Another example of parents blaming others and refusing to hold themselves and their children responsible for their own actions.
This is a huge loss for Naperville Central’s swim program and will set it back for years to come.
This is very unfortunate for the swimmers at NCHS. Two of my kids swam at Central and Mike was an amazing and dedicated coach. My son was involved in these traditions and the activities were always voluntary. No swimmer was ever forced to participate. Coach Mike will be missed on the pool deck at NCHS!
This is very sad! I love Mike and greatly admire him. He is an awesome coach and the kids ALWAYS came first.
