Indiana made an early run throughout prelims, but four A finalists for Michigan evened the score for the Wolverines during day 3 prelims of the 2016 Big Ten Women’s Championships.

Michigan finished swimming with 20 finalists, including a whopping 10 A finalists (10/5/5).  Indiana, who had the most even day throughout, qualified 19 finalists (9/6/4).  Purdue stood third with 17 finalists, although 10 of those are set for the C finals (4/2/10).

Ohio State (13) and Penn State (12) rounded out the top five with defending champion Minnesota falling back with just 9 finalists (5/2/2).

400 IM

Ohio State’s Lindsey Clary raced her way into the top seed in the distance medley event with a time of 4:07.05.  No one else came even close to her time.  Minnesota’s Brooke Zeiger qualified second in 4:09.98 with Michigan’s Bi Yirong taking third overall in 4:10.91.

Indiana and Michigan both made a big move in this event as Indiana claimed 5 finalists (2/1/2) and Michigan earning 4 finalist (2/1/1).

100 fly

Li Zhesi, a former world record holder for China who also served a two-year doping suspension earlier in her career, claimed Ohio State’s second top seed of the morning with a pool record time of 51.72.  That swim cleared the 51.85 set by Caroline Rodriguez of Michigan back in 2009 and put Li in line to lower the Big Ten record of 51.56 set by Mackenzie Powers of Penn State in 2014.

That’s a strong swim for Li, who just took down the 50 free last night.

Indiana’s Gia Dalesandro finished second in 52.08 with Wisconsin’s Dana Grindall earning the third seed in 52.61 as the only other sub-53 swims of the morning.

Following the 100 fly, Indiana pushed its finalist tally to 8 (4/2/2), while Purdue moved to 7 finalists (2/1/3).  Minnesota owned 5 finalist spots (3/0/2), while Michigan held 5 as well (2/2/1).

200 free

Indiana’s Haley Lips broke a long standing pool record with a 1:44.36 to top the women’s 200-yard free.  That swim downed the 1996 facility standard of Martina Moracova when she swam a 1:44.64 for SMU.

Lips was joined in the top 2 by teammate Kennedy Goss, who posted a 1:44.84 for the second seed.

Michigan’s Siobhan Haughey led a trio of Wolverines into the A final with a third-seeded 1:44.94.  Gillian Ryan (1:46.30) and Gabriel DeLoof (1:46.42) also made the big final.

Indiana had a big event in the 200 free with 2 up, 3 middle, 1 down to push their total finalists to 14 (6/5/3).  Michigan (5/3/2) and Purdue (3/2/4) each have 10 finalists after the 200 free.

100 breast

Indiana’s super freshman Lilly King unleashed a pool and school record time of 58.38 to lead the Hoosiers to another 1-2 seed finish.  That swim broke the pool mark of 59.17 set by Jillian Tyler back in 2009.  King will now target Tyler’s conference mark of 58.08 from 2011.

King’s teammate Miranda Tucker put up a 59.37 to qualify second, while Iowa’s Emma Sougstad (59.50) and Purdue’s Emily Fogle (59.61) also cleared 1:00 in prelims.

Indiana made a big push in terms of point-scorers with 17 total finalists after the 100 breast (8/5/4).  Michigan continued to remain close with 14 finalists (6/4/4).  The biggest problem for Indiana, however, if you want to call it that is that most of their swimmers are all seeded at the top of their heats, while Michigan’s swimmers are all in the middle of their heats.  That means IU has to swim to their seeds to maximize points this evening.

Purdue also stood at 14 finalists, but is bottom heavy with 7 C finalists (4/2/7).

Indiana’s Marie Chamberlain was the lone IU qualifier in the A final with a third-seeded 52.54.
