Max DeYoung Sets State Record as Laramie Three-Peats at Wyoming Boys 4A Championships

The 2020 Wyoming Boys 4A State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Laramie High School in Laramie, Wy.

Laramie successfully defended their overall team title with 255.5 points to secure their third-straight and 22nd overall championship crown in program history. For the second year in a row, Laramie senior Max DeYoung was awarded Swimmer of the Meet and Swimmer of the Year honors after setting a new state record in the 100 back with a time of 49.16 while Laramie head coach Tom Hudson was named the 4A Coach of the Year.

Laramie began their winning ways as Max DeYoung (23.00), Eli Willardson (29.34), Mace Spiker-Miller (23.26), and Colton Drury (21.80) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:37.40. Kelly Walsh was second in 1:38.24 and Cheyenne Central was third in 1:41.25.

After finishing second in the 200 free last season, Kelly Walsh’s Kellen Chadderdon found himself in the top spot this year after winning the event by over three seconds in a final time of 1:44.07. Cheyenne South’s Jared Price raced to second in 1:47.41 and Thunder Basin’s Caleb Carsrud was third in 1:49.91.

Green River’s Jason Richmond, who was the runner-up in the 200 IM in 2019, earned the gold medal this year after stopping the clock in 2:01.54. Cheyenne Central’s Ethan Merrill grabbed silver in 2:02.82 and Campbell County’s Caden Morton posted a time of 2:03.14 for bronze.

Soon after helping his medley relay team to victory, DeYoung was back in the water to splash-and-dash his way to the wall in 20.64 to win the 50 free for a new pool record. Kelly Walsh’s Ian Pfaff sprinted to second in 20.91 and his teammate Carter Mahoney finished third in 21.62.

Thunder Basin’s Isaiah Haliburton, last year’s runner-up, dove to first on the 1-meter board this season after posting a final score of 444.30 for the win. Cheyenne East’s Julian Yates took second with 429.70 points and Laramie’s Dylan Bressler was third with a total score of 421.65.

Spiker-Miller gave Laramie yet another victory after he flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 53.21 for the state title. Kelly Walsh’s Jonas Armstrong improved upon his third-place finish last year to take second in 53.52 and Campbell County’s Corte Christensen was third in 54.19.

After finishing second in the 50 free earlier in the meet, Pfaff redeemed himself by clinching the gold medal in the 100 free when he sprinted to the wall in 47.05. Drury raced to second in 48.42 and a time of 48.91 was good enough for Carsrud to take third.

200 free runner-up Price earned himself the gold in the 500 free with a final time of 4:56.05 as the only swimmer in the field to dip under the five-minute marker. Laramie’s Collin Fontana raced to second in 5:02.84 while Campbell County’s Eli Andrews grabbed the third spot on the podium with a time of 5:09.02.

Kelly Walsh’s Mahoney (21.69), Armstrong (22.74), Ian Byrnes (23.23), and Chadderdon (21.07) combined to win the 4×50 free relay in a time of 1:28.73. Campbell County was second in 1:30.39 and Cheyenne Central finished third in 1:31.40.

DeYoung was back on the medal stand after he successfully defended his state title in the 100 back, winning the event by nearly six seconds in a final time of 49.16 for a new state record. Cheyenne Central’s Logan Schaad (55.05) and Kelly Walsh’s Braden Lougee (55.59) completed the top three.

Chadderdon was the only athlete under the minute-marker in the 100 breast, clocking in at 59.58 to win the event for the second year in a row. For the second-straight year, Richmond took second in this event with a time of 1:00.70 and Cheyenne Central’s Carson Birge took third in 1:02.10.

Kelly Walsh’s Mahoney (49.51), Pfaff (47.92), Lougee (51.05), and Chadderdon (46.14) concluded the meet by winning the 4×100 free relay in a combined time of 3:14.12. They were two seconds ahead of Laramie’s 3:16.70 and Green River finished a distant third in 3:22.10.
