Lander Valley Earns 23rd-Consecutive Wyoming Boys 3A Championship Title

The 2019 Wyoming Boys 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Campbell County School Aquatic Center in Gillette, Wy.

A total of four Wyoming 3A State records were broken at this meet, all from Lander Valley swimmers. The Tigers used their impressive depth to secure their 23rd-straight championship title with 286 points ahead of Rawlins (241) and Sublette County (148).

Lander Valley’s Jonny Kulow (23.95), Caleb Huelskamp (25.03), Ryan Brinda (24.22) and Nick Kulow (20.85) began the meet with a bang as they successfully defended their title in the 4×50 medley relay. Their combined time of 1:34.05 crushed the previous 3A record of 1:39.15 set back in 2015. Rawlins was a distant second in 1:43.56 and Powell was third in 1:47.42.

Last year’s 200 IM winner, Nick Kulow, of Lander Valley took first in the 200 free this year with a time of 1:46.07. Rawlins teammates Taylor Harshman (1:52.08) and Dalton Coleman (1:54.72) rounded out the top three by taking second and third, respectively.

J. Kulow took the 200 IM by storm, winning in 1:54.55 as the only swimmer to crack two minutes. His time broke the 1996 3A record of 1:55.76 swum by Phil Rehard. The next fastest time was performed by Powell’s Richard Spann (2:08.59) for second followed by Lyman’s Kyler Legault (2:11.36) for third.

Huelskamp defended his state title in the 50 free and broke the previous 3A record of 20.93 set by Jake Rehard in 1998 with a quick time of 20.82. Worland’s Zayne Cooper followed with a time of 22.20 for second while Lyman’s Hansen Bradshaw posted a time of 22.99 for third.

One-meter diving’s top three spots were scored by juniors Preston Plaisted (356.05) of Lander Valley for the win, followed by Bryce Hogen (305.35) of Powell and Seth Felbeck (304.90) of Buffalo.

Lyman senior Carson Walker flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 54.06. Only .06 seconds behind was Brinda in 54.12 for the runner-up spot and Harshman secured third place with a time of 57.44.

J. Kulow earned yet another state title in the 100 free, finishing nearly three seconds in front of his competitors with a time of 46.43. Cooper was last year’s winner in the event, but ultimately earned a silver medal this year in 49.35. Lander Valley’s Nolan McFadden was a second behind, taking third place with a final time of 50.34.

N. Kulow defended his 500 free 3A state title and won by over 10 seconds as the only competitor to break five minutes with a time of 4:56.71. Jackson Fouras (5:06.97) of Sublette and Carson Walker (5:19.96) of Lyman touched the wall second and third, respectively.

Rawlins’ Isaac Nitschke (23.07), Eric Engstrom (24.28), Jesse Mendoza (23.21) and Braxton Langenderfer (23.27) won the 4×50 free relay in 1:33.83. Second went to Lyman in 1:34.61 and Worland secured third in 1:37.02.

After taking second in the 200 IM, Spann finally earned a gold medal in the 100 back with a time of 54.23 to lead the top five finishers under the minute-mark. Brinda (55.15) earned another silver medal and McFadden earned another bronze (56.26).

Huelskamp defended his 100 breast state title with a time of 55.80, crushing his own 3A state record of 57.28 he set at this meet last season. Fouras got his hands to the wall in 1:02.37 for second and 1:04.08 was fast enough for a third-place finish for Coleman.

Lander Valley secured their team by proving victorious in the 4×100 free relay with a dominant final time of 3:07.39. Sublette County raced to a distance second in 3:29.17 while Rawlins finished third in 3:30.41.
