Lake Forest Relay Breaks State Record on Final Day of Illinois Girls High School State Championships

On the final day of the Illinois High School State Championships, one of the most exciting races was saved for the end with the record breaking relay swim that came from Lake Forest.

Lake Forest blew away the field and set a state record with the team of Daria Pyshnenko (50.78), Madeline Smith (50.64), Haley Nelson (51.84) and Reilly Lanigan (50.32) coming together to post a time of 3:23.58, which upset Glenview’s 2012 record of 3:24.50. They were followed by Rosary, whose team of Young (52.00), Emily Ryan (50.66), Linda Licari (51.94) and Yager (51.84) posted a time of 3:26.44, while St. Charles North was third in 3:27.74 with the efforts of Samantha Sauer (51.73), Audrey Guyett (51.35), Jillian Waslawski (53.13), and Monica Guyett (51.53).

The State Championship went to Rosary, who had a overall point total at the end of the meet of 192. They were followed by Lake Forest, who had 154 points, while St. Charles North was third with 122.5.

Rosary started off their State Championship bid early in the day, winning the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Athena Ye (25.90), Sydney VanOvermeier (29.87), Camryn Streid (24.91) and Emily Ryan (23.01) combining for a time of 1:43.69. Oak Park was second with Hannah Blankemeier (26.45), Genevieve Curry (28.97), Samantha Neilson (25.59) and Natalie Ungaretti (23.04) putting together a time of 1:44.05. Loyola Academy’s group of Shannon Kearney (26.17), Claire Voss (28.64), Maria Kyle (25.84) and Cassidy Coughlin (23.59) were third in a time of 1:44.24.

Kirsten Jacobsen of Barrington won the 200-yard free with a sizzling time of 1:48.15. She was followed by Reilly Lanigan of Lake Forest who posted a time of 1:49.24, while a tie between Monica Guyett of Saint Charles North and Ella Tierney of Loyola Academy ended with the women sharing the podium with a time of 1:50.14.

Alexis Yager maintained her seat in the 200-yard freestyle, posting the winning time of 2:01.58. She was followed by Valerie Tarazu of Crystal Lake Central who was second in 2:01.65, while Ema Rajic of Urbana U-High was third in 2:02.02.

Daria Pyshnenko of Lake Forest seized the 50-yard free win with a time of 22.59. She was followed closely by Avery Braunecker of Effingham who was 22.81 and Bailey Grinter of Edwardsville who also was under the 23-second barrier with a time of 22.95.

In the Girls 1-mtr Diving event Sydney Dusel of Naperville claimed her state championship with a point total of 490.60. She was followed by Lucy Hogan of Evanston who posted 463.15, while Jessie Creed of New Trier was 459.60.

Carly Kramer of Plainfield Central won the 100-yard fly in a time of 54.53. She was followed by Katie Rentz of Rosary who hit the wall in 55.03. Camryn Streid of Rosary was third in 55.77.

Pyshnenko followed up her win in the 50 free with another victory in the 100 free, winning the event in 49.77. Braunecker followed with a swim of 50.18, while Georgia White of Oswego East was third in 50.33.

The 500-yard free featured a close race between the top 3 finishers, with all three women finishing in the 4:47 range. Kristen Jacobsen of Barrington led the field, finishing in 4:47.08. Lanigan was second with a time of 4:47.89, while Guyett was third in 4:47.95.

The 200-yard free went to Rosary once again, with a strong time of 1:33.72. Lake Forest was second in 1:34.67, while Saint Charles North was third in 1:34.85.

The 100-yard back went to Ye in a time of 54.97, followed by Audrey Guyett who posted a 55.56 to top Ryan’s third place finish of 55.82.

Tarazi held on to her seed in the 100-yard breast with a solid swim of 1:02.55, just enough to outdo Rajic’s 1:02.68. Noelle Peplowski claimed the bronze with a swim of 1:03.20.
