Kevin Houseman Breaks 21-Year-Old Record; Bainbridge Island Wins Washington Boys 3A States

The 2019 Washington Boys 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

Bainbridge Island’s Kevin Houseman broke a 21-year-old Washington state record in the 100 breast, while his team’s 4×100 free relay eclipsed the previous state mark. Mercer Island’s James Richardson also broke a pair of meet records in the 100 fly and 100 back en route to being named Swimmer of the Meet for the second-straight year.

The meet came down to the final relay, with Bainbridge Island ultimately winning to secure the team title with a final score of 414 ahead of rival Mercer Island (400).

Bainbridge Island’s William Waite (24.12), Houseman (24.85), Andrew Witty (22.47) and Aidan Wagner (21.28) began the meet by winning the 4×50 medley relay in 1:32.72, a half-second ahead of runner-up Mercer Island (1:33.38) and third-place finisher Odea (1:36.40).

Bainbridge Island’s Jude Wenker cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:39.93 as the only swimmer in the field under 1:40. Mercer Island’s Killian Riley was second in 1:42.75 while Gig Harbor’s Andrew Sexton took a close third in 1:42.80.

Bainbridge Island started the meet by winning the first three events as senior Waite won the 200 IM in 1:50.68, shaving nearly two seconds from his prelims time. Mercer Island’s Alex Edwards raced to second in 1:52.54 while Eastside Catholic’s Charlie Arnold placed third in 1:53.23.

Gig Harbor freshman Billy Oates splashed-and-dashed his way to a win in the 50 free, stopping the clock in a quick 20.88 as the only athlete under 21 seconds. Bishop Blancet’s Korbin Vera (21.65) and Markow (21.78) finished second and third, respectively.

Kiernan Liberman of Bainbridge Island dove to first on the 1-meter board after posting a final score of 443.00 for the win. Shorewood’s Isaac Poole took second with 410.45 points followed by Bainbridge Island’s Brian Taylor who finished third with a score of 382.00.

Richardson flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, clocking in at 48.55 as the first of only two swimmers under 50 seconds. His time broke Todd McCarthy’s meet record of 49.12 set in 2014. Second went to Oates in 49.93 while Bainbridge Island’s Makai Ingalls wound up third in 50.28.

Wenker showed his freestyler talent by adding the 100 free title to match his 200 free crown from earlier, sprinting to first in 45.60. His teammate Waite raced to second in 46.16 while Bishop Blancet’s Ethan Zverev finished in 46.59 for third.

Jacob Headrick of Mercer Island dropped over five seconds from his prelims time to win the 500 free in a final time of 4:36.56. Also breaking 4:40 was Edwards (4:37.33) and Bainbridge Island’s Sam Chapman (4:38.31) who took second and third, respectively.

Bainbridge Island’s Oskar Bannister (22.34), Wagner (21.39), Ingalls (20.78) and Wenker (20.40) combined to win the 4×50 free relay in 1:24.91. Mercer Island (1:25.72) and Lakeside (Seattle) (1:27.182) completed the top three.

Richardson powered home to a win in the 100 back as the only swimmer to go under 50 seconds, doing so in 48.43. That time eclipsed Thane Maudslien’s meet record of 48.56 set in 2013. Odea’s Nathan Hayes raced to second in 50.11 and Witty finished third in 50.79.

Houseman lit the pool on fire in the 100 breast, getting his hands to the wall to post a three-second victory in 53.43. That time snuck under Pat Fowler’s Washington state and 3A meet record of 53.66 set back in 1998, before Houseman was even born. Arnold was second in 56.85 and Bainbridge Island’s Maxwell Eyrich was third in 57.65.

Bainbridge Island’s Ingalls (46.61), Witty (46.97), Garrett Waite (45.46) and Wenker (44.91) concluded the meet with a bang, winning the 4×100 free relay in 3:03.95 to take down their own 3A meet and Washington state record of 3:05.29 set last season. Mercer Island wound up second in 3:06.62 with Roosevelt taking third in 3:15.50.
