Kevin Glenn Eclipses State Record, Blue Valley West Earns Team Title at Kansas 6A Boys Meet

The 2019 Kansas 6A Boys State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Capitol Federal Natatorium in Topeka, Kan.

Kevin Glenn broke the Kansas 6A state record in the 100 back to guide O P Blue Valley West to the team title with 280.5 points. O P Blue Valley North’s 4×50 free relay also broke the 6A state mark en route to finishing a close second with a score of 278.

The meet began as Olathe-East’s Aidan Walters (25.34), Phillip Costello (25.97), Micah Leslie (23.16) and Jack Gabrielson (21.46) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:35.93, only inches ahead of runner-up Wichita East (1:35.98). Lawrence Free State was third in 1:36.25.

O P Blue Valley West’s Jonah Park cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:41.25 for the fold. Silver went to O P Blue Valley North’s Logan McMonigle in 1:43.08 while Shawnee Mission North’s Trey Smith grabbed bronze in 1:44.93.

Shawnee Mission West’s Will Frankel dove to first on the 1-meter board, finishing with a final score of 499.10. Zane Kohl of Manhattan finished second with 444.95 points while Christian Tafoya of Derby took third with a total score of 436.40.

Glenn led the top three swimmers in the 200 IM under the two-minute marker, winning the event in 1:54.41. Shawnee Mill Valley’s Christian Sprenger raced to second in 1:55.36 while Shawnee Mission East’s Sam Bruck touched third in 1:58.20.

Wichita East freshman Drayden Bell splashed-and-dashed his way to victory in the 50 free, posting a quick time of 20.73. Lawrence Free State’s Benjamin Vorthmann took second in 21.07 while O P Blue Valley North’s Marshall Wietharn placed a close third in 21.10.

Reilley Moore of Lawrence Free State flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 50.18 for the win. Smith raced to second place in 51.89 while Weitharn again finished third with a time of 52.02.

After taking second in the 50 free, Vorthmann redeemed himself by winning the 100 free in a swift 46.00. The splash-and-dash champion Bell (46.46) and O P Blue Valley North’s Sean North (47.00) finished second and third, respectively.

Park added another gold medal to his hardware collection, adding the 500 free to his 200 free victory by winning the race in 4:37.70. Eight seconds back was his teammate Sam Foster in 4:45.42 and Wichita Southeast’s Alec Lebeda completed the top three in 4:47.89.

O P Blue Valley North’s North (21.19), Wietharn (21.65), McMonigle (20.64) and Richie Stewart (21.09) won the 4×50 free relay in 1:24.57, bettering their own Kansas 6A record of 1:25.47 set back in 2017. Olathe-East (1:27.94) was second and O P Blue Valley West (1:29.20) was third.

Not too long after his 200 IM win, Glenn was back in the water to win the 100 back in record-setting fashion. His final time of 50.14 broke Ben Scheffer’s previous 6A record of 50.43 from 2011. Wichita North’s Isaac Hadorn was second in 52.72 and Wichita East’s Sam Hutchinson was third in 53.22.

After swimming the breaststroke leg on the victorious medley relay, Costello won the individual 100 breast by getting his hands to the wall first in 57.80. Also under 60 seconds was runner-up Sprenger in 58.78 and O P Blue Valley West’s Chase Lane wound up third in 1:00.01.

O P Blue Valley North was also victorious in the 4×100 free relay to conclude the meet. The team of McMonigle (47.75), North (46.91), Sam Peterson (49.29) and Stewart (46.76) combined for a time of 3:10.71 ahead of Lawrence-Free State (3:11.62) and Wichita East (3:12.11).
