Junior Nationals, Day Two Finals: Emerson Callis Claims Second Title
Emerson Callis picked up her second victory of the United States Junior National Championships on Tuesday night, winning the 400-meter individual medley. Coming off a Night One triumph in the 200 butterfly, Callis led for all but one of the eight laps and finished with a time of 4:45.36. That performance handed Callis, of Quest Swimming, a win of almost a second over runnerup Zadie Schatz (4:46.25).
Callis led through the opening 150 meters, but slipped to second at the 200-meter mark, at which point the lead was taken by Rowyn Wilber. But Callis reclaimed the lead on the first half of the breaststroke leg and pulled away from there. Wilber finished third in 4:47.97.
On the boys’ side, Syunta Lee fended off a challenge from Cullen Kahl to win the 400 IM. Lee posted a swim of 4:18.00, with Kahl going 4:18.27 for second place.
In the finals of the 100 freestyle, Adalynn Biegler and Brody Chandler emerged with victories. Biegler clocked a time of 55.73 and was joined under 56 seconds by runnerup Anna Shnowske (55.95). Chandler led a quartet of boys under the 50-second barrier and was followed to the wall by Brady Campbell, who went 49.80.
The girls’ 50 breaststroke came down to the touch, with Kate Canales collecting a narrow triumph. Canales posted a time of 32.04, which was just ahead of the 32.08 from Grace Koenig-Song. Canales was seventh in the 100 breaststroke on Monday night while Koenig-Song was third.
Neil Adamski dominated the field in the boys’ 50 breaststroke, thanks to a time of 27.89. Adamski was a half-second faster in prelims, where he went 27.39.
