Junior National Qualifier Hana Sungail Selects Southern Methodist for 2027

NEW COMMIT: Southern Methodist University has recorded a new verbal commitment for the 2027-28 season and beyond from Hana Sungail of Altamonte Springs, Fla. Sungail is a Junior National qualifier who excels in freestyle and butterfly.

She will join Sophia Richard and Annabelle Nawrocki as a member of the Mustangs’ Class of 2031.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I’m thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to Southern Methodist University! I want to thank my family for their unwavering support, especially my brother, whose wisdom has guided me. A special thank you to Coaches Steve and Jill for igniting my passion for this sport, and to my friends for their constant encouragement, which keeps me motivated on the pool deck. I am immensely grateful to Coach Joe, who has pushed me to grow both mentally and physically, helping me rediscover my love for swimming. Lastly, I’m incredibly thankful to Coach Ozzie for this amazing opportunity. I can’t wait to see what the future holds. Go Ponies!”

Sungail, who trains year-round with Blue Dolfins Oviedo/WinterPark, had five top-10 finishes at Florida Short Course Seniors in March. She earned three best times at Juniors East in December. Last summer, she took second in the 50m free at Florida Long Course Seniors before going on to final in five events at Ocala Futures.

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.39
  • 100 free – 50.70
  • 200 free – 1:49.54
  • 50 fly – 25.63
  • 100 fly – 56.13

A rising senior at Lake Brantley High School, Sungail collected the bronze medal in the 100 free and 200 free at the 2025 Florida 4A State Championships. She placed ninth and fourth, respectively, in those events at the state meet in 2024.

SMU competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Sungail’s best time in the 50 free would’ve ranked fifth on their lineup last season.
