Greenwich Captures Team Title at Connecticut Girls High School State Meet

The Greenwich high school girls captured the Connecticut State Open Meet this past weekend, finishing over 100 points ahead of the second place New Canaan. The Greenwich Cardinals have a lot of history at the State Open Meet, having won a total of 10 team titles between 1999 and 2011. While Greenwich didn’t take home any individual or relay titles, it was their depth and strength in diving that helped bring them the team title. Meet Recap

The Weston team of Claire Kerns, Sophie Angus, Carolyn Morikawa, and Charlotte Proceller started the meet off with a bang, setting a new state record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.17. Sophie Angus followed up with that relay win with an individual state title in the 100 breaststroke, winning by over a second in 1:03.14.

The other state record of the meet came in the 100 backstroke, with Ridgefield junior Marcella Maguire taking the top spot in 54.13. That lowered her own state record of 54.91. Maguire also won the 200 freestyle earlier in the meet, touching in 1:50.18. Other multiple event winners included Staples senior Amelia Bullock, who took both the 200 IM (2:02.42) as well as the 100 Butterfly (54.52). The meet’s most interesting double came at the hands of Ludlowe sophomore Sarah Grinalds, who won both the 50 (23.47) and 500 (4:56.60) freestyle events. New Canaan senior Katie Colwell won the 100 freestyle in 51.11.

New Canaan captured both the 200 (Katie Colwell, Madeleine Smith, Lizzy Colwell, Meghan Egan) and 400 (Caroline Sweeney, Meghan Egan, Libby O’Hare, Katie Colwell) freestyle relays, taking the titles in 1:36.30 and 3:28.30 respectively.

While Greenwich didn’t win any individual or relay titles, consistent top 6 showings combined with depth through many events gave them the team title. Interestingly, many of Greenwich’s squad was made of freshman and sophomores, which should make them a serious contender to defend their title for years to come.
