Dimond Girls, Kodiak Boys Win Alaska High School State Crowns

Dimond High School totaled 95 points to win the 2016 Alaska Girls High School Swimming State Championship. Kodiak High School won the boys title with a 105 point total.

Girls Meet

Juneau Douglas High School bookended the meet with relay victories. Sarah MertzMia RuffinGabi Kito, and Andyn Mulgrew-Truitt posted a 1:51.75 in the 200 medley relay. Kito, Cameron Howard, Mulgrew-Truitt, and Ruffin combined for a 3:40.76 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Ruffin also won two individual events. She dominated the 200 IM in 2:06.38 and also posted a significant victory in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:05.82.

Sitka High School’s Jessica Davis was another double winner. She stopped the clock in 58.31 in the 100 backstroke, the only swimmer to clear a minute. Her 100 butterfly win was much closer. Davis posted a 59.11. Bartlett High School’s Wanlaya Jarupakorn (59.39) and Colony High School’s Camille Dayton (59.65) finished second and third.

Jarupakorn won the 50 freestyle in 24.75. Colony’s Izzy Powers joined her under 25 with a 24.87. Powers then won the 100 freestyle in 52.80, a half second ahead of Kodiak’s Marina Cumminskey (53.33) and Dimond’s Erin Moody (53.42).

Cumminskey and Moody went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.72 and 1:54.97. Also under two minutes was Sitka’s Skylar Moore in 1:58.65.

Dimond’s Camryn Williams won the 500 freestyle with a 5:15.91.

Sitka’s Whitney and Kuleigh McArthur, Davis, and Moore won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.92.

Boys Meet

Dimond High School won the final two relays of the meet on their way to a second place finish overall. Reed DittlingerNathan AlfanoChristopher Chung, and Maximus Addington (1:26.31) won the 200 freestyle relay. That quartet combined for a 3:09.05 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Thunder Mountain opened the meet with a 200 medley relay victory (1:38.58) with the team of Noatak PostBergen DavisSpencer Holt, and Chris Ray.

Talon Lindquist led Kodiak to their state title with two individual victories. He posted a 49.50 in the 100 backstroke and a dominating 1:39.78 in the 200 freestyle.

Thunder Mountain’s Davis was a double winner. He captured the 100 breaststroke in 58.03, the only swimmer to clear a minute. Davis also stopped the clock in 1:54.75 in the 200 IM. Colony’s Jake Simmons and Sitka’s Jack Weaver were also under two minutes with times of 1:56.05 and 1:59.70. Davis’ teammate Holt won the 100 butterfly in 50.84.

Caleb Law of Soldotna High School won both sprint titles on Saturday. He edged Dimond’s Ditlinger and West Valley’s Tristan O’Donoghue 47.20 to 47.28 and 47.58 in the 100 freestyle. Law registered a 21.32 in the 50 free. Second went to Cody Watkins (21.53) and Palmer’s Max Snelders (21.80) finished third.

Lathrop’s Alex Suleimani was victorious in the 500 freestyle with his 4:43.14.

Powers actually beat jarupakorn in the 50. 24.17 to 24.68. Those results are from prelims you have up there for the girls 50.
