Caleb Law Splits 19.89 as Dimond Girls, Service Boys Win Alaska State Championships

The Alaska High School State Championships was held on Nov. 2 at Barlett High School in Anchorage, Alaska. The Dimond High School girls won the State crown for the second-straight year and Service won the team title on the boys’ side.

Senior Caleb Law earned four gold medals and cracked the 20-second barrier in the 50 free twice en route to anchoring Service to a pair of relay victories.

Girls’ Meet

Sitka’s Jessica Davis, Grace Harang, Sophia Schwantes and Kyleigh McArthur began the meet with a win in the 4×50 medley relay, taking the title in 1:49.80.

Dimond’s Breckynn Willis was one of two swimmers to crack the two-minute barrier in the 200 free, doing so in a winning time of 1:57.28. Palmer’s Ellyse Russell was second in 1:59.25. Willis then went on to be named champion in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 58.03 just ahead of Eagle River’s Kiara Borchardt (58.23).

Seward’s Lydia Jacoby dropped nearly four seconds from her prelims swim to win the 200 IM in 2:09.31. She also bested the 100 breast field by over four seconds with a victorious time of 1:03.11. Chugiak’s Izzy Powers powered her way to a win in the splash-and-dash, earning the 50 free gold in a quick 23.92 as the only swimmer to sneak under the 24-second mark.

Wasilla’s Jayde Chan dove to first on the 1-meter board with a final score of 419.20 ahead of Dimond’s Jenna Walch who took second with 403.25 points. Dimond’s Dreamer Kowatch cruised to first in the 500 free, knocking off almost eight seconds from her morning time to earn the victory in 5:14.82

Dimond’s Willis, Brooke Dittlinger, Emi Soldwedel and Kowatch combined to win the 4×50 free relay in 1:40.40, out-touching Eagle River (1:40.91) and Palmer (1:40.92) for the honor. Willis, Soldwedel and Kowatch combined with Mikayla Terry to conclude the meet as 4×100 free relay champions (3:38.19).

Eagle River’s Ellie Mercer took the top spot in the 100 back with a swift 58.40 and Davis also broke the minute mark with a second-place showing in 58.88.

Service’s Brian Jarupakorn, Tavner Wisdom, Ian Sands and Caleb Law dominated the 4×50 medley relay to open the boys’ meet to win the event by six seconds in 1:34.00. Law split an impressive 19.89 on his freestyle leg; he then went on to win the individual 50 free by 1.5 seconds in a quick 20.60 and bested the field in the 100 free for his third gold of the day with a time of 46.08.

Dimond’s Maximus Addington cruised to victory in the 200 free in 1:42.31 to defend is State title ahead of his teammate Jesse Tatakis (1:45.35). Soldotna’s Kylin Welch dove to the gold medal in the 1-meter diving with a final score of 433.15 ahead of West Anchorage’s Houlton Dannenberg who took second with 410.15 points.

Jarupakorn shaved off almost two seconds from his morning swim to be named 100 fly champion with a final time of 50.47, just tenths ahead of Addington (50.65). Jarupakorn gave Service another win by taking the top spot in the 100 back in 51.50.

Service’s Jarupakorn, Sands, Austin Carpenter and Law won the 4×50 free relay in 1:25.47, five seconds faster than all other relay squads. For the second time of the meet, Law dipped under 20 seconds and anchored his relay in 19.93.

Eagle River’s John Heaphy was one of two boys to crack two minutes in the 200 IM, finding himself on top of the podium in 1:56.16 ahead of Hutchison’s Noah Palmer (1:59.24). Heaphy earned his second title of the meet in the 100 breast, besting the field by three seconds to win in a fast 56.76.

Palmer then went on to dominate the 500 free by ten seconds, shaving off almost 11 seconds from his prelims time to take the title in 4:42.58. Dimond’s Addington, Christopher Loudon, Kenneth Octuck and Tatakis concluded the fast State meet as victors in the 4×100 free relay in 3:11.95, five seconds faster than the rest of their competitors.
