Cal Gets Another Major Recruit for 2028: Junior Pan Pacs Silver Medalist Wilson York

NEW COMMIT: The University of California, Berkeley has added yet another huge verbal commitment in what’s shaping up to be a monster Class of 2028. Wilson York of Louisville, Ky. – who is the best breaststroker in the class – announced his verbal pledge to the Golden Bears.

He will join Charlie Cancelmo, David Sammons, Grant Bellin, Cullen Kahl and Kai Joyner in Berkeley as a member of the Golden Bears’ Class of 2032.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“After careful consideration, I am incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of California, Berkeley! First and foremost, I would like to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity. I would also like to thank my parents for their endless love, sacrifices, and support throughout this journey, along with my family, friends, and teammates who have supported me along the way. I am especially grateful to my coaches, Mike, Mimi, Nick, and Todd, for helping me grow not only as a swimmer, but also as a person. Finally, a huge thank you to Coach Dave, Noah, Maya, Brody, Keenan, and the entire Cal family for believing in me and giving me this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is truly an honor to be a part of such a special program, and I cannot wait to get to work alongside this team and see what we can accomplish together. GO BEARS! 🐻💙💛”

York, who does his club swimming with Lakeside Swim Team, is a member of the 2026-27 U.S. National Junior Team in the 100 breast and 200 breast.

This past summer, York earned silver in the 100m breast and 200m breast at Junior Pan Pacs where he also placed 11th in the 50m breast. He finished 17th in the 200m breast, 19th in the 100m breast, 21st in the 400m IM and 22nd in the 200m IM at Summer Nationals.

York was the 200 breast runner-up at Juniors West last December, also taking fifth in the 400 IM, 10th in the 200 IM and 15th in the 100 breast. He was the 100m breast, 200m breast and 400m IM champion at Indianapolis Speedo Sectionals in March.

His best times include:

  • 100 breast – 53.56
  • 200 breast – 1:55.14
  • 200 IM – 1:46.19
  • 400 IM – 3:47.72

Currently a junior at Saint Xavier High School, York is the two-time defending state champion in the 100 breast. The NISCA All-American took second in the 200 IM as a freshman and won that event as a sophomore.

The Golden Bears won their second straight Atlantic Coast Conference championship title in 2026 before placing seventh at the 2026 NCAA Championships. Cal has won 11 conference titles in program history.

York’s best time in the 200 breast is already fast enough to score in the C-final at the conference meet.
