One day after Claire Curzan broke the National High School record in the 100 back at the North Carolina 4A State Championships, Alex Walsh has lowered it once again.

While representing Harpeth Hall at the TISCA Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., Walsh dropped a 51.35 in the 100 back to eclipse Curzan’s overall National High School mark of 51.38 set the day prior. The previous record of 51.43 was held by Olivia Smoliga and had stood since 2012.

Her splits:

  • 50 back – 25.08
  • 100 back – 51.35 (26.27)

Walsh’s impressive swim also broke Ally Howe’s National Independent High School record of 51.54 set at the CIF State Championships on May 17, 2014. Fifteen-year-old Curzan still owns the National Public High School record in the event.

Her time would currently rank seventh in the NCAA so far this season and she is now the second fastest 100 backstroker in 17-18 age group history:

1. Regan Smith – 49.66
2. Alex Walsh – 51.35
3. Isabel Ivey – 50.42
4. Amy Bilquist – 50.50
5. Rachel Bootsman – 50.54

Walsh does her club swimming with Nashville Aquatic Club and is a member of the USA Swimming National Team. At the 2019 Pan-American Games in Lima, Peru, she earned two individual golds in the 200m back and 200m IM while also helping Team USA to victory in the 4x200m free relay.

Walsh has committed to Virginia and will suit up for the Cavaliers this fall.
