Aiden Hayes Takes Down David Plummer’s 100 Back State Record at Oklahoma 6A Championships

The 2019 Oklahoma 6A State Swimming Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Edmond Aquatic Center in Edmond, Okla.

Norman North’s Aiden Hayes highlighted the meet with four gold medals, two individual 6A records and was a member of a pair of record-setting relays. One of those records blew past Olympian David Plummer’s 2004 6A mark in the 100 back.

Bartlesville won the girls’ team title with 308 points, just ahead of runner-up Jenks’ score of 286. Jenks used their impressive depth to secure the championship crown on the boys’ side, finishing with 401 points ahead of Norman North (295.5).

Bartlesville earned gold medals in every event for the first half of the meet on their quest of team dominance. They defended their state title in the 4×50 medley relay, which was composed of Sydney Perry (27.48), Aidan Howze (31.76), Erin Downey (26.11) and June Harris (23.30) who combined for a final time of 1:48.65.

Harris jumped right back up on the blocks to win the 200 free with a time of 1:53.85 and later grabbed another state title in the 100 free (51.73). Perry conquered the back-to-back double by winning both the 50 free (24.14) and 100 fly (57.24). Downey continued for another gold in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.96, and later earned another win in the 100 breast by soaring into first with a 1:05.65.

Bartlesville’s Hollis Gilbert dropped five seconds from her prelims time to win the 500 free in 5:05.92. Kayley Henderson of Bixby won the 100 back with a time of 57.73. Also breaking the one-minute-marker were Broken Arrow’s Annie Kramer (58.15) and Jenks’ Jenna Vann (59.87).

Union’s 4×50 free relay team of Kendra Vonhartitzsch (26.23), Abby McMahon (26.32), Courtney Posey (25.03) and Kelly Vu (25.72) sprinted their way to first, touching the wall at 1:43.30 for the win.

Bartlesville defended their state title and won the 4×100 free relay to secure their overall championship crown as Harris (52.93), Jordyn Kahler (57.41), Hollis Gilbert (54.56) and Downey (54.34) combined in 3:39.24.

Norman North defended their state title and scored a 6A record in the 4×50 medley relay, which consisted of Hayes (21.36), Jonathan Tang (26.58), Daniel Wilson (22.01) and Nathan Tucker (21.66) posting a final time of 1:31.61.

Jenks’s Alex Yanchunas took first in the 200 free, cruising to the wall at 1:44.42. Andrew Truong (21.78), Jazz Widney (21.30), Reed Gilman (22.74), and Austin Sung (22.11) combined in the 4×50 free relay, giving Jenks another victory in 1:29.47.

Norman’s Caleb Sullivan took gold for the second-staright year in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.90. He was followed closely behind by Tang, who finished at 1:54.60 for second. Tang then went on to win the 100 free with a time of 45.74.

Hayes stole the show this meet, first by setting a new record in the 50 free after sprinting past the 21-second marker for a final time of 20.09 to break Jake Pearce’s old 6A mark of 20.65. The sophomore earned another gold medal in the 100 back with yet another record-breaking time of 47.28, taking down Plummer’s 6A record of 48.42 set back in 2004.

It was a tight 100 breast battle, as Jenks’ Morne Wolmarans (58.56) and Bartlesville’s Will Englehart (58.57) were only .01 apart; Wolmarans ultimately got the state title. Wilson won the 100 fly, getting his hands to the wall the fastest in 49.57.

Norman North’s Wilson (45.61), Tang (45.59), Nathan Tucker (47.63) and Hayes (44.64) concluded the meet with a bang as the dominated the 4×100 free relay in 3:03.47, posting the team’s fourth Oklahoma 6A record of the day.
