Xu Jiayu stamped a new 50m backstroke world record of 22.03 to take down Pieter Coetze’s standard from earlier this month.
Xu took 0.06 off the South African’s standard of 22.09 set at the Tashkent World Cup stop just 15 days earlier.
The 31-year-old rewrote the record books leading off the Zhejiang Shouxian Valley mixed 4x50m medley relay quartet at the Chinese National Championships.
It obliterated his previous best of 22.70 – also an Asian record – that had stood since 2018.
World Aquatics updated its regulations earlier this year making lead-off legs on mixed relays eligible for world records and WJRs.
