The 19-year-old won the world junior title last year in Otopeni, Romania, little more than three weeks after a 47.78 leadoff as Italy won 4×100 free silver at the World Championships in Singapore.
On Thursday, he led throughout, splitting 22.76/25.07 for 47.83 – 0.05 off his PB – and a ticket to the European Championships in Paris.
“The goal was this: to win and swim under 48,” he told the Italian federation. “Now let’s see how the 200 will go on the final day.”
Alessandro Miressi – whose Italian record stands at 47.45 – was second in 48.46 to go inside the cut with Lorenzo Zazzeri third in 48.53.
The Riccione meet represents the first opportunity for swimmers to book a place on the Italy team for the European Championships in Paris from 10-16 August. Their second chance will come at the Sette Colli meet in Rome in June.
Curtis & Quadarella Take Second Titles
Sara Curtis led from start to finish to claim the women’s 100 free crown in 53.40 ahead of Emma Menicucci (53.75) and Chiara Tarantino (54.30).
It was her second title in as many days after she set an Italian 50 back record of 27.33 on the opening night and sees her book a second swim in Paris.

Simona Quadarella won her second title with a dominant 1500 free victory in 15:55.89. The world silver medallist – who spent a training block with Dean Boxall at St Peter’s Western in Australia – added gold to her 400 free title and ensured a second swim in Paris. Ginevra Taddeucci – the Paris 2024 10k bronze medallist – was also inside the cut in 16:08.35 with Emma Vittoria Giannelli third in 16:18.99.
Luca De Tullio got the action underway with a 7:47.60 victory in the 800 free to book his ticket for Paris. David Marchello added silver to his 400 gold with a 7:52.26 PB as Filippo Bertoni took third in 7:54.48.
Jacopo Barbotti made up a deficit of 0.63 at the final turn to come past Alberto Razzetti and seize the men’s 200IM title by a sliver in 1:57.75 to 1:57.76 as both men went inside the QT. Simone Spediacci was third in 1:59.27.
Anita Gastaldi also punched her ticket to Paris with a 2:11.06 victory in the women’s 200IM. Chiara Della Corte was also inside the QT in 2:11.58 with Sara Franceschi third in 2:12.79.
