World Aquatics, IOC Approves Artistic Swimming Qualification for Los Angeles Olympics
The International Olympic Committee and World Aquatics have approved the artistic swimming qualification pathway for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
The pathway was developed by the IOC Sports Department, the World Aquatics Bureau and the World Aquatics Technical Artistic Swimming Committee with input from national federations, coaches and athletes.
The Olympic quote is at 96 athlete places for two events, team and duet. Competition in Los Angeles will feature 10 teams of eight athletes (with up to two male athletes each) and 18 duets.
The U.S., as host country, automatically qualifies a team and a duet. Qualification begins at the World Aquatic Championships in Budapest June 26-July 18, 2027 as well as continental championships that year. It concludes with the 2028 World Aquatics Artistic World Cup Super Final, at a date and site to be determined.
The full system is outlined here.
“Our goal has been to create meaningful and accessible opportunities for aquatics athletes to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games through high-quality competition pathways,” World Aquatics president Husain Al Musallam said in a press release. “Fairness and global representation were core to our approach. This has been a collective effort, and I am pleased that we have delivered a clear and equitable pathway for athletes pursuing LA28.”
Artistic swimming will be part of the second week of the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 at the Long Beach Aquatics Center from July 25-29. The team event final will be on the branded Super Saturday, Day 15 of the Games on July 29, which will feature 26 medal finals in 23 sports.
The artistic swimming approval follows LA28 qualification systems published for swimming and open-water in the last month. Pathways for diving and water polo are up for review and possible approval by the IOC executive board in early February.
