William & Mary Swimming Sweeps Towson

William & Mary swimming swept Towson in a Colonial Athletics Association throwdown.

The William & Mary men’s swimming team cruised to victory in the season-opener on Saturday, sinking Towson 161-101 at home. With the win, the Tribe improved to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Tigers fell to 0-1 (0-1 CAA).

The Tribe led from the first gun, winning 10 of the 14 events including both relays. The 200 medley relay set the tone in the first event, as the team of Will Manion (Haddonfield, N.J.), Jeremiah O’Donnell (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Justin Barden (Gordonsville, Va.), and birthday boy Joe Eiden (White Plains, N.Y.) combined to swim 1:30.88, the fastest dual-meet relay ever and the sixth-fastest performance in all of school history. At the other end of the meet, Manion and Eiden paired up with senior Billy Russell (Newport News, Va.) and junior Alex Montes de Oca (Orange, N.J.) to win the
400 free relay in 3:04.51.

Individually, the big winner was O’Donnell, the defending CAA Swimmer of the Year, who won all three of his races In the 100 breast, he swam a lifetime-best 55.79, the 15th-best performance ever at W&M, and improved to fifth in school history in the event. Next he swam 2:03.54 to break his own dual-meet record in the 200 breast, and capped the day with a relatively-sedate 1:52.99 win in the 200 IM. Russell also got into the records business with his two wins, breaking his own pool record in the 200 free in 1:40.61. His second win came in the 100 free, when he took down the field in 46.60 seconds.

Manion was another double-winner, sweeping the backstrokes in 49.15 for the 100 and 1:48.94 for the 200, and Barden took the 100 fly in 50.28 seconds. Sophomore Tommy Kealy (Wilton, Conn.) rounded out the notables, breaking W&M’s dual-meet record in the 200 fly with his second-place 1:51.41.

The William & Mary women’s swimming team got the year off to a fast start Saturday, flying past CAA rival Towson 152-110 in the season-opener. The Tribe improved to 1-0 on the year and in-conference with the win, its first over Towson since 2005-06, while the Tigers fell to 0-1 overall and in the league.

The Tribe won eight of 14 events on the day, including both relays, and had at least a second or third in most every event. The 200 medley relay set the tone right from the start, as the team of Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.), Annie Valls (Miami, Fla.), Jessie Ustjanauskas (West Hartford, Conn.), and Jaimie Miller (Houston, Texas) broke the pool record and the Tribe’s dual-meet record with a time of 1:43.34, the seventh-fastest performance in school history. That and a second-place finish in the relay put the Tribe in front 15-2, and except for a brief moment after the 200 free when Towson was on top 20-16, W&M never trailed again.

Ustjanauskas went on to sweep both butterflies, winning the 200 fly in 2:05.72, and leading a 1-4 sweep in the 100 fly in 56.72 seconds. She also swam on the winning 400 free relay, teaming with Noelle Klockner (Marlboro, N.J.), Emily Schroeder (West Windsor, N.J.), and Miller to win in 3:30.50. Miller also took gold individually, winning the 100 free in 51.48 seconds.

Junior Sophie Rittenhouse (London, England) won both of her individual events, sweeping the backstrokes. She won the 100 back in 58.34 seconds, and came back later to take the 200 back in 2:03.79. Sophomore Jess Crowley (Acton, Mass.) came from out of the pack to win the 50 free, touching the wall in 24.11 seconds. Freshman Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.) jumped into the Tribe’s all-time top-10 in her first swim, earning a bronze medal in 10:18.15 in the 1,000 free to rank ninth in school history.

The Towson men’s swimming and diving team fell to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) foe William & Mary in dual meet action 161-101 on Friday. The Tigers won four events and had 20 top-three event finishes.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Tigers swept the 1000-yard freestyle, led by junior Tim Schade who won with a time of 9:29.78. Sophomore Matt Sieffert followed in second-place (9:37.46) and junior Brandon Ress came in third-place (9:40.61).
Freshman Jack Saunderson was impressive in the 200-yard butterfly, winning the event with a time of 1:50.43. Senior Matt McKenney placed third, timing 1:53.68.
In the 500-yard freestyle, the Tigers took first and second place. Freshman Will Dougherty won the event with a time of 4:36.99. Schade followed in second-place (4:37.77).
Senior Matt Hans won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.07. He finished third in the 100-yard freestyle (46.82).
Sophomore Colin Roddy earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.61) with freshman Stefan Keller coming in third (1:57.17).
McKenney earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, timing 1:42.25. Dougherty came in third (1:42.65).
In the 100-yard butterfly, McKenney finished third in 50.47. Freshman Jack Saunderson placed fourth with a time of 50.73.
Junior Nick Breschi was the runner-up in the 100-yard (50.23) and 200-yard backstrokes (1:52.18).
Junior Jeremy Liu finished third in both the 100-yard (58.68) and 200-yard breastrokes (2:07.01).
The 200-yard medley relay finished in second-place as Breschi, junior Jeremy Liu, McKenney and Hans combined for a time of 1:32.90.
Breschi, sophomore Nick Essing, Hans and senior Zach Brech combined for a third-place finish with a time of 3:09.57.

The Towson women’s swimming and diving team finished second with 98 points at the Potomac Relays, held at the Reeves Aquatic Center on Friday afternoon. The Tigers won six events and had 18 top-three event finishes.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Junior Macey Arnold had an impressive day, winning both the 200-yard (1:51.71), 500-yard (5:01.61) and 1000-yard freestyles (10:14.45).
Senior Jenna Van Camp won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.01. She was followed by freshman Sara Lacusky (1:07.12) who placed third.
Van Camp also earned a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, timing 2:20.76.
Senior Charlotte Holz won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:07.12. Senior Christine Hammond placed third (2:09.89).
In the 200-yard freestyle, senior Hannah Snyder finished in second-place (10:16.26). She also took second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.81).
Holz was the runner-up in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.11. She also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (52.25).
Hammond placed third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.09).
In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Jacy Icard timed 24.41 for a third-place finish.
The Tigers swept third through fifth-place in the 100-yard backstroke. Freshman Natalie Obando placed third ( 58.90), followed by sophomore Kendall Krumenacker (59.54) and freshman Kara Powell (1:00.26).
Obando finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.36).
The 200-yard medley relay finished in third-place as Obando, Van Camp, freshman Tara Goss and Icard combined for a time of 1:47.17.
The 400-yard freestyle relay of Arnold, Icard, Holz and freshman Ryan Ulrich finished second overall with time of 3:32.31.
