Victorian State Championships, Day 3: Carlile’s Paris Olympian Olivia Wunsch Wraps Up Treble With Impressive 200m Freestyle Win

Carlile’s Paris Olympian Olivia Wunsch has continued her impressive start to 2025, wrapping up a much sort-after freestyle treble on the final day of the Mattioli Victorian Open LC Championships at the Melbourne Sport Ands Aquatic Centre.

The 18-year-old 2024 Olympic 4x100m freestyle relay gold medallist added the 200m freestyle title to her wins in the 50m (25.15) and 100m freestyles (54.16) – the double she had also won at the South Australian Championships.

In the 200m final, Wunsch clocked 1:58.97 to swim away from Commonwealth Youth Games champion Inez Miller (Fenix Swim Club, WA) 1:59.52 and local star Tara Kinder (Melbourne Vicentre, VIC) who dipped under two minutes for the first time in 1:59.95.

Kinder wrapped up her impressive “in training” meet with her fourth gold medal, winning the 200m butterfly in 2:14.50 – after her earlier wins in the 400m freestyle, 400m individual medley and 200m breaststroke.

But it was the 200IM win from Nunawading’s Isabella Boyd in 2:13.56 that won her the Female Swimmer of the Meet Award, capping an encouraging weekend that also saw her finish second to Japanese Olympian Rikako Ikee in an all-star 100m butterfly final.

The Male Swimmer of the Meet went to Paris Olympian and 2024 World Champion Sam Williamson(Melbourne Vicentre, VIC) who set a new Victorian All-Comers Record of 26.66 in the 50m breaststroke.

With Para Swimmers of the Meet Awards going to: Nicholas Layton (Nunawading) for Men’s 50m Butterfly MC and Bendigo’s Sarah Howe for Women’s 400m Freestyle MC.

Nunawading’s Lily Koch also caught the eye – setting a new Victorian 16 years record of 31.83 in the heats of the 50m breaststroke, later holding on to win the final in 32.27 from club mate Madeleine Horvath 33.02 and Stephanie O’Donnell (Yarra Plenty Waves, VIC) 33.77, in an all-Victorian podium.

While visiting Manly all-rounder Gabriel Gorgas (representing Sydney’s Metro North East, NSW) chalked up another eye-catching win the 400IM – clocking a personal best time of 4:24.45 – adding to his 200IM win and a silver medal to Paris Olympian Max Giuliani in the 100m freestyle.
