USA Water Polo, Diversity in Aquatics Launch Co-Ed Team at Howard University

USA Water Polo has teamed with Diversity in Aquatics to relaunch a co-ed water polo team at Howard University.

The effort looks to build on the success that Howard’s swimming and diving team has enjoyed in recent years. The revival is lead by Howard junior Colin McMahon, who played the sport in high school.

USA Water Polo is supporting the program with an initial grant of $8,000 that will provide equipment, coaching and facilities fees. Manufacturer Malmsten also donated goals.

Working closely with McMahon on the project is John Abdou, a member of Diversity in Aquatics’ board and the Associate Athlete Director of Health, Wellness and Sports Performance at University of California-Irvine.

“We are thrilled to partner with Diversity In Aquatics and Howard University to re-establish their co-ed water polo team,” Abdou said in a press release. “This initiative not only broadens student opportunities but also reinforces our shared commitment to diversifying the aquatics space and creating more inclusive, accessible pathways for all.”

“USA Water Polo is proud to support Howard University’s relaunch of their co-ed water polo program with this grant,” USA Water Polo Chief Development Officer and DEI Development Grant Committee member Eva Padilla Sfregola said. “This initiative underscores our commitment to breaking barriers in aquatics and fostering an inclusive environment where students and athletes have the opportunity to participate and thrive at HBCUs and beyond.”

Howard is hosting a tournament on Nov. 3. Those interesting in learning more of donating to the program can email info@diversityinaquatics.com.

Diversity In Aquatics is committed to reducing drowning disparities and increasing swim participation in historically underrepresented communities. Through advocacy, education, and outreach, the organization works to create equitable access to aquatic opportunities for all.
