USA Swimming Reveals Squad for Junior Pan Pacific Championships (Full Roster)
USA Swimming has announced a 40-strong roster for the Junior Pan Pacific Championships, which will be held in Vancouver from August 17-20. The team was selected at last week’s United States National Championships in Irvine, California, where 18-and-under qualifying races were conducted just before the championship races. Team USA will be headlined in British Columbia by Luka Mijatovic and Audrey Derivaux, both University of Texas recruits.
Mijatovic qualified in the 200 freestyle, 800 freestyle and 1500 freestyle while Derivaux is on the roster in the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 200 backstroke, 200 individual medley and 400 individual medley. As is the case with the Pan Pacific Championships, qualified athletes for Junior Pan Pacs can enter any event they want. Consequently, Mijatovic will also contest his best event, the 400 freestyle, where he went 3:43.45 last week.
Although entries are wide open, each country is limited to advancing just two swimmers into the championship final. That format raises the stakes during prelims and calls for swimmers to press the pace to ensure they are a top-two finisher for their nation.
In the 200 butterfly, Ewan Dalrymple will make the trip to British Columbia. After clocking a pair of 1:56 swims during Nationals, Dalrymple dipped into 1:55 territory during Junior Nationals. He’ll be joined on the roster by Gabi Brito, who is expected to see action in multiple events, including relays.
