University of South Carolina Tops UNC-Wilmington as Delaney Franklin, William Carrico Shine
The University of South Carolina swim and dive teams took care of business in their season-opening contest at UNC-Wilmington. The Gamecock women triumphed 250-50 while the men won a much tighter meet by a score of 165-135.
South Carolina’s women opened with a 200 medley relay time of 1:40.55, with Tori Abruzzo, Elizabeth Goodwin-Berine, Taylor Grimley and Kara West on the squad. Abruzzo touched first in the 100 backstroke (54.78). Emma Reiser topped the 1000 freestyle for SC in 9:54.95, followed by Ellery Ottem winning the 200 free in 1:47.70.
Alexis Dalton picked up a come-from-behind win in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.44) before Delaney Franklin used another furious finish to win the 200 butterfly (2:00.23). In the sprint freestyle events, Kate Murray won the 50 (23.34), and Sofia Luper took first in the 100 (50.26). Later, Farrah Klein of the Gamecocks topped the 200 back (1:58.20) before Franklin’s second win in the 200 breast, this one wire-to-wire in 2:12.10.
In the final portion of the meet, Reiser won the 500 free (4:52.13), and Samantha Chan led the way in the 100 fly (53.76). The final individual event, the 200 IM, saw Franklin get to the wall first yet again with a mark of 2:00.30. Luper, Lilly Robertson, Dalton and Ottem took the win in the 200 free relay in 1:33.03 while diving wins went to Reagan Patterson (1-meter 296.48) and Kyleigh Kidd (3-meter, 267.30).
Connor Fry set the tone for the Gamecock men, winning the 1000 free in 9:05.98. Pierre Largeron took second in the 1000 before dominating the 200 free (1:36.53), and he later won the 500 as well (4:22.34). Einar Margeir Agustsson led the way in the 100 breast (54.05) and 200 breast (1:58.93), and Tyler Bardak topped the 200 fly (1:47.61). Emil Jose Perez Avila came in first in the 100 free (45.68), and Sammy Empey topped the 100 fly (49.15). Diver Max Spencer placed first on -meter (324.53) and 3-meter (380.03).
The UNCW men got the meet started with a bang as Kris Lawson, William Carrico, Simon Russell and Hil Lindsay finished first in the 200 medley relay in 1:27.64. Carrico grabbed three individual wins in the 100 back (48.14), 200 back (1:45.81) and 200 IM (1:47.44), while Lawson came in first in the 50 free (20.26). The team of Lindsay, Lawson, Will Mahorney and Joseph Busic won the 200 free relay in 1:20.98.
