TYR Pro Swim Series: Olympic Showdown Set in 100 Back

The TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Westmont is not short on big names and thus big matchups. But even among that, the field for the women’s 100 backstroke will stand out prominently Saturday night, the final evening of the meet.

Four members of the Paris Olympic final and five total Olympians are in line to contest the final, after prelims completed Saturday morning. Leading the way is Olympic silver medalist Regan Smith, who led out bronze medalist Katharine Berkoff in prelims. Both Smith and Shaine Casas on the men’s side face quick-fire doubles Saturday night, if they go through with the full program.

Women’s 100 backstroke

Regan Smith led the way Saturday morning with a time of 58.75. She’s the world record holder in this event at 57.13. Second was Katharine Berkoff in 59.60. Those two were on the Olympic podium in Paris last summer.

Joining them in the final are Canadians Kylie Masse and Ingrid Wilm, both Olympic finalists in this event. Masse went 59.95 to get the third seed, Wilm 1:00.94 for sixth. Olympian Rhyan White was fourth in 1:00.19, with American teen Rylee Erisman continuing a solid meet in fifth.

Men’s 100 backstroke

Tommy Janton led the way in prelims with a time of 54.31 to get himself in the middle of the pool Saturday night. He’ll be flanked by Shaine Casas, who went 54.81, and Jack Dolan, in 55.29. Canadian international Cole Pratt was fourth in 55.47.

Women’s 200 breaststroke

Kate Douglass was back at it Saturday morning – “it” being dominating. The Olympic gold medalist went 2:25.40, the top seed by nearly 3.5 seconds. German international Anna Elendt was second in 2:28.88, while Canadian Mary-Sophie Harvey dipped her toe into a different event for her, in third in 2:29.57.

Brazilian Gabriele Silva finished fourth, with Canada’s Sophie Angus fifth and Isabelle Odgers sixth. Lilly King wasn’t entered in the 200 breast.

Men’s 200 breaststroke

AJ Pouch led a somewhat limited men’s field by a wide margin, his time of 2:13.34 making him the top seed by 3.5 seconds. Canadian Apollo Hess finished second in 2:16.91. Only seven guys broke 2:20, among them Josh Bey in third.

Women’s 100 butterfly

In her second swim in the hour, Regan Smith went 58.45 to grab the top seed in the 100 fly. Only three swimmers broke a minute, with Lily Price second in 58.77 and Simone Manuel continuing a quick meet by taking third in 59.39 as a warmup to the 50 free later in the session. Even so, it’s a best time for her in an event she rarely contests, the previous best a 1:00.81 from the TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Bloomington in 2019.

Canada’s Matea Gigovic was fourth in 1:00.29, ahead of countrywoman Mary-Sophie Harvey in her second event on the trot. Madi Mintenko earned a spot in the A final by going 1:00.69. Penny Oleksiak was 10th in 1:01.36, and a busy Rhyan White was 13th.

Men’s 100 butterfly

On the back end of his double, Shaine Casas went 52.41, exactly 0.5 seconds up on Trenton Julian for the top spot. Kamal Muhammad finished third in 53.05, while the A final will have some international flair thanks to Brazilian Kayky Mota (fourth in 53.24) and Argentine Ulises Cazau (sixth in 53.62).

Women’s 200 individual medley

Summer McIntosh put together a composed swim to grab the top seed in the 200 IM, going 2:13.17. The reigning Olympic champion is the top seed in an event that Paris Olympic silver medalist Kate Douglass was not entered in.

Getting her three-for-a-quarter quota was Mary-Sophie Harvey, who finished second in 2:13.73. Also in that boat was Rhyan White, who went 2:18.00 for fifth. (It’s a best time for White, though her best was from 2017 and she hasn’t had a recorded swim in the event since 2020.)

Isabel Ivey is the third seed in 2:14.12. Teagan O’Dell was fourth, with fellow teen Kelsey Zhang seventh and Maya Hetland ninth, poised to capitalize on the first A final scratch. Madi Mintenko finished 12th.

Men’s 200 individual medley

Carson Foster led the way in prelims with a time of 2:01.55 that makes him the top seed. Michael Andrew was second in 2:02.88, with Grant House third. Trenton Julian finished fourth in 2:03.52.

Matheo Mateos finished fifth.

Women’s 50 freestyle

While everyone else is widening their programs, Kasia Wasick is doing one thing and one thing well. The Polish veteran went 24.81 to grab the top seed in the 50 free. Kate Douglass was second in 24.85 for what should be an intriguing finals showdown. Aussie Meg Harris was third in 25.07, followed by Simone Manuel in 25.11.

Wasick was 17 when Rylee Erisman was born, but the teen went 25.22 for fifth, just ahead of Erika Connolly, 11 years Erisman’s senior. Ekaterina Nikonova and Lilly Price tied for seventh.

The B final has some names, too. Among them are Penny Oleksiak in 10th, Katharine Berkoff in 12th, Ingrid Wilm in 13th and Teagan O’Dell in 16th.

Men’s 50 freestyle

The star power in the men’s 50 free is, well, not quite that of the women’s. But on top of the pile was Mikel Schreuders of Aruba in 22.26. His fellow Sun Devil Jack Dolan was second. Canadian Yuri Kisil was third, ahead of one-time Notre Dame commit Shane Eckler. Singaporean Jonathan Tan finished fifth, with Michael Andrew sixth in 22.83.

There’s some drama, with Hunter Armstrong and Robin Yeboah tying for eighth in 22.84, which will require a swim-off. Grant House was 10th.
