Tylor Mathieu Joins Coaching Staff at South Carolina

The University of South Carolina on Saturday added Tylor Mathieu as an assistant coach to the women’s swimming and diving team.

Mathieu was an assistant at Washington State in the 2024-25 season, helping three Cougars qualify for the NCAA Championships in 2025. That includes Emily Lundgren, Washington State’s first All-American since 2007.

“I am incredibly honored to join the swim staff at the University of South Carolina,” Mathieu said in a press release. “The University’s commitment to excellence, both in athletics and academics, is truly among the best in the nation. I’m thrilled for the opportunity to contribute to the continued success of this program and help it achieve its goals. I want to sincerely thank Jeff Poppell for this amazing opportunity. It’s especially meaningful to reunite with Jeff as part of his staff, having previously been coached by him at my alma mater. Go Gamecocks!”

Mathieu swam at the University of Florida, then spent a year as a manager for the Gators. Her head coach at the start of her college career was Jeff Poppell, now South Carolina’s head coach.

Mathieu was a six-time All-American and four-time Academic All-American. Mathieu was part of the 2023 SEC Championship squad, in which she finished fourth in the 500 freestyle. That team went on to finish ninth at NCAAs, with Mathieu part of a sixth-place 800 free relay. She qualified for U.S. Olympic Trials in 2021 in the 400 free, 800 free and 100 breaststroke.

“I’m very excited that Tylor has agreed to join us at South Carolina,” Poppell said. “Having coached Tylor at the University of Florida, I can attest first-hand to her strong work ethic, great character, and unyielding commitment to ensuring that she and those around her are successful. I believe she is a rising star in the collegiate coaching profession, and I have no doubts of the positive impact that she can have in our program and in helping our women continue to excel and develop both in and out of the pool.”

The native of Hebron, Connecticut, received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Florida, with a minor in education and a certificate in sport management.
