Thomas Heilman Tops 400 IM at YMCA Nationals as Schroeder Girls Continue to Dominate
Remaining perfect through three days at YMCA Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., is Thomas Heilman, the high school senior who has established himself as the country’s best 200 butterflyer in the past two years. While Heilman has not challenged any records at his final short course meet prior to college, he has now captured two individual wins and helped Piedmont to three relay titles.
Heilman came in at 3:48.21 in the boys’ 400 IM final after leading wire-to-wire. He won the event by almost five-and-a-half seconds over Birmingham’s Ethan Xu (3:53.66), with Spartanburg’s Maddex Ternes third (3:56.60). Later on, Heilman led off his team’s 200 free relay in 19.62 before Will Browne, Jack Hathaway and Will Charlton finished off the win in 1:19.83, easily beating Greater Somerset (1:21.53) and Schroeder (1:21.89).
Lakeland Hills’ Connor Johnson doubled up in the backstroke events, winning the 100 in 46.88 to add to his earlier 200-yard win. Johnson came from behind to beat Greater Somerset’s Kenneth Barnicle (46.99), with McGaw’s Rayburn Kohl third (47.93). The boys’ 200 free went to Schroeder’s Ethan Schutten in 1:34.90, with Browne (1:36.15) and Ridley Area’s Jonathan Hoole (1:37.70) among the top-three.
For the girls, the Schroeder YMCA has been dominant thus far, and that trend continued Wednesday with a 1-2 finish in the 100 back to open the session. Alana Berlin added to her earlier 200 back win with a time of 51.33 here, and teammate Maggie Dickinson took second (52.69). Lowes’ Alyssa Claborn grabbed third (53.87).
Anne Dickinson won the 200 free for Schroeder in 1:47.95, coming from behind to beat Greater Somerset’s Colleen Bull (1:48.04), with Oshkosh’s Kiersten Dietschweiler taking third (1:49.75). Schroeder’s team of Berlin, Maggie Dickinson, Anne Dickinson and Ari Zhao led the way in the 200 free relay in 1:31.31, beating out Greater Somerset (1:32.73) and Greater Monmouth (1:34.27).
The win in the 400 IM went to Molly Yacoviello of York in 4:15.05, with Spartanburg’s Claire Burns (4:17.51) and York’s Aivleen Walsh (4:19.75) completing the top-three.
Unsurprisingly, the Schroeder girls have a commanding lead with 278 points, beating York (202) and Upper Main Line (182). Heilman has led Piedmont to a lead in the boys’ competition, with 240.5 points to lead Spartanburg (200) and Schroeder (170).
