Thomas Ceccon Sets Italian 200m Backstroke Record At Australian Open Championships

Thomas Ceccon set an Italian 200m backstroke record of 1:55.71 at the Australian Open Championships in Brisbane.

The Olympic champion in the 100 back, Ceccon has been training under Dean Boxall at St Peters Western since early January and bypassed last week’s Italian Championships.

He posted 23.00 to head the 50 fly prelims before bypassing the final and instead focused on the 200 back where he took 0.58 from the previous standard of 1:56.29 held by Matteo Restivo as he secured bronze at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow.

Splits:

27.40/56.90 (29.50)/1:26.52 (29.62)/1:55.71 (29.19)

Ceccon was followed home by Josh Edwards-Smith, coached by Mel Marshall at Griffith, who came home in 1:58.23 and Kane Follows of New Zealand (1:58.96).

His time was 0.16 inside Ollie Morgan’s PB of 1:55.55 en-route to the backstroke clean sweep at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships with the Briton heading the world rankings ahead of Roman Mityukov who went 1:55.64 at the Swiss Championships with Ceccon third.

Ceccon will also compete in the 50 and 100 back in which he set the WR of 51.60 at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest plus the 100 fly and 100 free. He’s already secured qualification for the World Championships – which run in Singapore from 27 July to 3 August – in the 100 back with a time of 52.84 at the National Preparation Meet and secured a spot on the 4×100 free relay.
