Texas Inducts Amy Shaw, Garrett Weber-Gale to Hall of Honor
Swimmers Garrett Weber-Gale and Amy Shaw were announced this week in the Hall of Honor 2026 Class by the University of Texas.
Members of the Hall will get a special salute during the Longhorn’s Sept. 19 football game against UTSA.
Weber-Gale assembled an impressive career in Austin from 2004-07, then parlayed it into a pair of Olympic relay gold medals and seven World Championships golds over nearly a decade on the international scene. His accolades include eight American and four world records.
Weber-Gale won two NCAA titles, 19 Big 12 titles and 23 All-American nods at Texas, where he was three times the Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Year.
The Stevens Point, Wisconsin, native arrived as a national high school record holder. He became the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2003-04 as the runner-up in the 200 free at the conference meet. The Longhorns finished third at NCAAs that year, setting a world record in the 400-meter medley relay at an SCM NCAAs in an Olympic year. He won his first individual NCAA title in the 100 free in 2006 as a junior in addition to seventh place in the 50 free and ninth in the 100 back. He won three straight Big 12 100 free titles and was third in that event as a senior at NCAAs.
Weber-Gale just missed the U.S. Olympic team in seventh in the 100 free at Olympic Trials in 2004. He made his senior international debut in 2005, winning gold in the 400 free relay at Worlds. He turned in an exemplary Trials in 2008, winning the 50 free and 100 free, briefly holding the American record in the latter. He placed 13th in the 100 free and 14th in the 50 at the 2008 Olympics and was part of the iconic U.S. victory over France in the 400 free relay in Beijing.
Weber-Gale was inducted to the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
Shaw swam for the Longhorns from 1990-93. A nine-time All-American, she led Texas to four straight Southwest Conference titles and two NCAA championships, including as the high individual point scorer in 1990 as a freshman.
A native of California and product of the Mission Viejo Nadadores, she earned a bronze medal in the 200 breast at the 1986 Goodwill Games and set an American record a year later on the way to a national title.
She won conference titles in the 200 and 400 individual medley and was the NCAA runner-up in both to go with a fifth-place 200 breast finish. She was third in the 400 IM and fifth in the 200 IM as a sophomore on a national title team. Texas finished second as a team at NCAAs in 1992 and third in 1993.
Shaw’s international accolades include gold in the 400 IM at the 1991 Pan Am Games.
Weber-Gale joins track and field athletes Mark Boswell and Ryan Crouser; football players Malcolm Brown, Jackson Jeffcoat, Mike Williams and Lawrence Stapleton; volleyball player Khat Bell; softball player Blaire Luna and head coach Connie Clark; basketball player Evwella Munn; and tennis player Janet Walker. It’s the 72nd men’s class and the 27th women’s group to be inducted.
