Sun Devil Open: Torri Huske Doubles Up to Open Meet
Torri Huske won the women’s 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle on the opening day of the Sun Devil Open Friday.
Huske went 2:11.57 in the 200 IM final to prevail in an all-Stanford battle for the wall. Second was Caroline Bricker in 2:11.90, with Lucy Bell third in 2:12.00. Huske was more than a second ahead at the 150-meter wall but held off the charge by her Cardinal teammates. Another Cardinal, Emily Thomas, was fourth.
Huske capped the night by going 25.43 to win the 50 free. She bested another former Stanford swimmer in Taylor Ruck, who went 25.52. (Ruck has been quicker in 25.40 in prelims.) France’s Marie Wattel was third in 25.67, and Caroline Bentz placed fourth took third in 25.81.
Also on the Stanford front, Bailey O’Regan won the 400 freestyle in 4:17.07, three seconds ahead of Alexa Reyna of Arizona State. O’Regan was second in the 1500 freestyle, behind winner Paige Downey, who went 16:51.41.
Michael Andrew went 27.31 to win the 50 breaststroke, the opening event of the first night session at his training base, the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. Aruban international Mikel Schreuders was second in 27.54. Arizona State swimmer Andy Dobrzanski set a best time by nearly four tenths in finishing third in 27.66.
He nearly added a second win to finish the night, going 22.25 in the 50 free. That was second to Jonny Kulow’s time of 22.04, within two tenths of his best time of 21.87. Jack Dolan finished third in 22.40, .01 ahead of Schreuders. Ilya Kharun was fifth in 22.61.
Lucy Thomas won the women’s 50 breaststroke in 31.22 seconds, three tenths ahead of Eleni Gewalt.
Ashton Joswiak won the men’s 1,500 free in 16:30.04, besting fellow 16-year-old Kevin Foley, who set a best time of 16:32.67. Ian Pickles set a best time in the 400 free to win in 3:58.96. Two faster swimmers in prelims – Henry McFadden in 3:56.96, Patrick Sammon in 3:57.12 – scratched finals after their prelims performances.
Grant House went 2:01.98 to win the 200 IM. Josh Zuchowski finished second in 2:03.52, with Aaron Sequeira third in 2:04.24.
