47-year-old Steve West of Irvine Novaquatics swam a 1:04.84 in the 100 breaststroke in long course meters on Sunday at the Fran Crippen Swim Meet of Champions in Mission Viejo, California. West lowered the Masters world record in the process that he set last month at the Speedo Grand Challenge in Irvine at 1:04.99.

West finished ninth overall in the morning’s prelims. 2016 Olympic gold medalist Dmitriy Balandin (1:01.40) is the top seed and Asian Games silver medalist Yan Zibei (1:01.80) is second.

West indicated he scratched finals for tonight. He also swam the 200 breast on Friday, placing 13th in the prelims at 2:21.39. West scratched out of finals of the 200 as well.

He also holds the 200 breast LCM records in the 40-44 age group (2:18.57) and 45-49 age group (2:19.44).

West’s best time in the 100 breast was all the way back in the 2000 US Olympic Trials at 1:03.39 at the age of 28. He has been as quick as a 1:03.81 from the 2015 Los Angeles Invitational. West still has some more room to go if he is to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Trials. The time standard for Omaha next year is a 1:03.29.

Steve West’s last appearance at the Olympic Trials was in 2012 when he placed 61st in the 100 breast and 62nd in the 200.

The fastest time at prelims would’ve won Olympic Gold at the ’92 Olympics. People are getting soooo fast!

A World Master record should ONLY be beaten on a Masters competition. FINA rules.

It would be nice if Swimming World would state that it’s 100m and long course. I thought it might be yards until I saw the results at the end of the article.

It is in the first sentence of the article, and it is LCM season, being summer.
