Stanford and USC Battle For Top Spots In Final Day Of The 2016 Pac 12 Championships

Day four of the 2016 Pac 12 Men’s Championships continued with fast swims across the board.

200 BACK

Patrick Mulcare of USC delivered the top time in prelims of the 200 back, stopping the clock at a sizzling 1:40.22.

Stanford’s Patrick Conaton placed second in prelims with a time of 1:40.85, shaving 2.41 seconds off his entry time of 1:43.26.

Thane Maudslien of Arizona rounded out the top three with a time of 1:41.60 with Stanford’s Ryan Arata finishing close behind with a time of 1:41.66 for fourth.

USC’s Jonathan Knox took fifth in prelims with a 1:41.92, while ASU’s Barkley Perry posted a 1:42.00 for sixth.

Arizona’s Chatham Dobbs and Cal’s Connor Green finished seventh and eighth with a 1:42.47 and 1:43.29.

100 FREE

Stanford’s Sam Perry dashed to the top of the qualifiers list in the 100 free turning in a 42.92 to be the only athlete under the 43-second mark.

Cal’s Justin Lynch and Arizona’s Renny Richmond stopped the clock a slim .02 seconds apart to return as second and third for tonight’s finals. Lynch turned in a 43.08 over Richmond’s 43.10.

The field only narrowed after that with the fourth through sixth place qualifiers posting times within .08 seconds of each other. USC’s Ralf Tribuntsov snagged fourth with a qualifying time of 43.21 while teammate Reed Malone posted a 43.25 for fifth. Richard Bohus of ASU finished sixth with a 43.29.

ASU teammate Tadas Duskinas grabbed seventh with a 43.34 and Stanford’s Spencer DeShon finished eighth in prelims with a 43.46.

200 BREAST

Steven Stumph of USC blasted to a 1:53.61 in prelims to return as tonight’s top qualifier in the 200 breaststroke. Stumph succeeded in shaving 3.09 seconds off his entry time of 1:56.70.

ASU’s Christian Lorenz posted the second fastest time of the morning, qualifying for tonight’s finals with a time of 1:55.03, while third went to Stanford’s Matt Anderson and his time of 1:55.24.

Cal teammates Matt Whittle and Hunter Cobleigh grabbed fourth and fifth respectively. Whittle stopped the clock at a 1:55.52 over Cobleigh’s 1:55.59.

Gage Crosby of Arizona and Morten Klarskov of USC tied for sixth after both stopping the clock at a 1:56.13, while Arizona’s Blair Bish rounded out the top eight with a 1:56.23.

200 FLY

Arizona’s Justin Wright turned in the top time in the 200 fly with a 1:42.19, while Stanford’s Gray Umbach finished second with a time of 1:42.41.

Andrew Seliskar of Cal finished third in prelims with a time of 1:43.58 just ahead of Stanford’s Jimmy Yoder (1:43.62).

Patrick Park of ASU grabbed fifth with a time of 1:43.72, while Cal’s Long Gutierrez was sixth with a 1:44.17.

Arizona’s Rasmus Skjaerpe (1:44.56) and Stanford’s Abrahm DeVine (1:44.77) finished seventh and eighth respectively.

PLATFORM DIVING

Ted Miciau of Stanford holds a narrow lead after prelims of platform diving with a score of 365.10.

ASU’s Heikki Makikallio finished second in prelims with a 362.05, while Utah’s Jake Crayne turned in a score of 356.75 to return as third tonight.

USC’s Dash Enos posted a score of 347.25 for fourth over Stanford’s Tarek Abdelghany’s 341.25.

Arizona’s Dominic Ricotta (339.55), USC’s Collin Pollard (331.90), and USC’s Deon Reid (324.60) also made the top eight.
