Southern Methodist Defeats Utah in Dual Meet
Southern Methodist University welcomes the Utah Utes to Dallas for a dual meet Saturday, and the Mustangs came out on top. The women won 161-133 while the men’s final score was 173-127.
SMU’s women won the 200 medley relay in 1:41.00 with a team of Jimena Leal, Izzy Krantzcke, Maddy Parker and Summer Osborne. Osborne quickly returned to the pool to win the 200 freestyle (1:50.46) while Leal topped the 100 backstroke (55.81) and 200 backstroke (2:01.64). Parker had wins in both the 50 free (22.86) and 100 free (49.66). Krantzcke pulled off a come-from-behind win in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.27).
Anne Marie Vlaic of the Mustangs dominated the 200 butterfly in 2:00.71, and she doubled up in the 100 fly (54.83). Krantzcke won again in the 200 IM (2:04.68) before the team of Parker, Osborne, Madeleine Herbert and Chloe Corbin topped the 200 free relay in 1:31.60.
Utah’s Hayley Smith placed first in the 1000 free (10:15.73) and 500 free (4:58.21), and teammate Erin Palmer pulled away for first in the 100 breast (1:01.47). Diver Kathryn Grant won 1-meter (295.28) and 3-meter (281.48).
For the Mustang men’s team, Francis Brennan set the pace with a winning mark of 1:35.69 in the 200 free, and teammates Jack Berube and Kristaps Mikelson followed with wins in the 100 back (46.98) and 100 breast (55.21), respectively. Sage Sungail won the 50 free (20.16) before Brennan edged Sungail by a tenth in the 100 free, 44.40 to 44.50.
Berube’s second win came in the 200 back (1:43.95), and Joe Umhofer was the top finisher in the 200 breast (1:59.41). Grant Cates placed first in 3-meter diving (313.43), and Jack Moore won the 200 IM (1:48.17). The team of Benjamin Chateigner, Sungail, Ward Lockhart and Eli Likins won a close contest in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:20.35.
Utah’s men got off to a fast start with Nolan Dunkel, Caleb Gallagher, Jackson Kehler and David Stachelek winning the 200 medley relay (1:27.77). Nick Chirafisi then placed first in the 1000 free (9:13.69) while the 200 fly went to Evan Van Brocklin (1:46.59). Chirafisi picked up a second victory in the 500 free (4:26.19), and Dunkel topped the 100 fly (48.10). In diving, Elias Petersen won the 1-meter event (325.13).
