Simone Cerasuolo Tops Nicolo Martinenghi for 50 Breast Title at Italian Championships
A stellar three-way showdown in the men’s 50-meter breaststroke highlighted the last session of the Italian Championships in Riccione on Thursday. En route to qualifying for this summer’s World Championships in Singapore, Simone Cerasulo earned the victory in a battle with Nicolo Martinenghi and Ludovico Viberti.
Cerasuolo claimed the victory in 26.59, an effort that wasn’t far off the Italian record of 26.33, set in 2022 by Martinenghi. The reigning Olympic champion in the 100 breaststroke, Martinenghi managed a runnerup time of 26.78, which was also under the qualifying standard for the World Champs. Third place went to Viberti, who touched the wall in 27.01.
Cerasulo and Martinenghi representd Italy in the 50 breaststroke at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, with Martinenghi grabbing the silver medal in 26.39. Cerasulo, meanwhile, was the sixth-place finisher, thanks to a swim of 26.93.
Already the champion of the 100 breaststroke, Anita Bottazzo added the 50 breaststroke title to her collection, behind a winning mark of 30.42. A University of Florida standout, Bottazzo finished .16 ahead of the 30.58 by Arianna Castiglioni. Third place went to Lisa Angiolini (30.63), who was the runnerup earlier in the meet in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke.
Multiple-time World Championships medalist Simona Quadarella completed her sweep of the distance events at the Italian Champs by besting the competition in the 400 freestyle. On the back of earlier wins in the 800 freestyle and 1500 freestyle, Quadarella won over eight laps in 4:08.50.
