SEC Championships, Night 3 Finals: Tennessee Sets NCAA Record in Men’s 200 Free Relay at 1:12.80; Jordan Crooks Blasts 50 Free Record

SEC Championships, Night 3 Finals: Tennessee Sets NCAA Record in Men’s 200 Free Relay at 1:12.80
A near miss in the 200 medley relay Tuesday night at the SEC Championships wasn’t enough for Tennessee. So the Volunteers made up for it on Wednesday, in a massive way.
The Volunteers bludgeoned the 2023 NCAA record of Florida, catapulting past 1:13 to 1:12.80 in a historic swim at Georgia’s Gabrielsen Natatorium. Jordan Crooks later won the 50 free in 17.85, his second sub-18 swim of the evening.
The action from Night 3, which saw Texas expand its lead in both competitions, including a commanding lead on the women’s side:

Women’s 200 freestyle relay
Three relays as an SEC school, two titles for Texas, thanks to the sprinters. Grace Cooper, Emma Sticklen, Abigail Arens and Ava Longi went 1:25.90, the standout Sticklen’s 21.07 on the second leg to take them from third to the lead. The margin was .45 seconds over Alabama. Texas had been third at NCAAs last year.
Alabama finished second in 1:26.35, an impressive result. Tennessee, the best placed SEC school at NCAAs last year in sixth, was third in 1:26.49. Reigning champion Florida fell to seventh this year, the slowest of the A cuts in 1:28.24. Georgia, LSU and Missouri added A cuts.

Men’s 200 freestyle relay
Take a bow, Tennessee. Jordan Crooks, Gui Caribe, Lamar Taylor and Nikoli Blackman went 1:12.80. That is .55 seconds quicker than Florida’s NCAA mark from 2023. Tennessee was fifth at NCAAs last year. Tennessee had missed the record in the 200 medley relay by .07.
The splits: Crooks 17.96; Caribe 18.04; Taylor 18.25 and Blackman 18.55
The Gators Wednesday undercut their old record yet had to settle for second. The reigning SEC and NCAA champions went 1:13.29 with Josh Liendo, Alex Painter, Ed Fullum-Huot and Scotty Buff. Liendo is the only holdover from both last year’s NCAA title and the record swim in 2023.
Texas finished third in an A cut of 1:14.94. Auburn, Texas A&M ad Alabama also booked auto trips to NCAAs.

Jillian Cox can add SEC Championships record to her conference mark from November. The sophomores went 4:31.54 to pull away from the crowd, winning by nearly three seconds. In the process, she downed the meet mark of 4:33.10 set in 2016 by Georgia’s Brittany MacLean. Cox’s conference mark is 4:30.68, which surely will be in the sights at NCAAs.
Georgia, which had three A finalists at NCAAs last year, pushed three into the top five this year. Rachel Stege is the runner-up for the second straight year, going 4:34.28 to outkick Florida’s Julie Brousseau to the wall by .31 seconds. Dune Coetzee was fourth for Georgia in 4:35.19, and Abby McCulloh was a spot lower than last year in fifth. The reigning conference champion and NCAA runner-up, Emma Weyant of Florida, finished sixth in 4:37.98.
The event was without Florida’s Bella Sims, the reigning national champion, who opted for the 200 IM.
Tennessee’s Ella Jansen, who entered with the third seed but missed the A final in the morning, delivered the second-fastest time of the race in winning the B final in 4:34.27, .01 up on Stege. Texas’s Lillian Nesty was second in the B final with a time of 4:36.72 that would’ve been fourth in the A final. Texas put three in the top 10 and four in the top 13, with Olympian Erin Gemmell seventh. This for a Texas team that didn’t place a single swimmer in the top 16 of a normally prosperous event at NCAAs last year.

After a so-so morning, Texas rebounded marginally at night. Rex Maurer, the American record holder who qualified seventh, won the event in 4:07.09. That’s a Georgia pool record, but the meet mark set by Kieran Smith in 2020 (4:06.32) survives.
The results elsewhere were more mixed for Texas. David Johnston slipped from third in prelims to sixth place. Coby Carrozza won the B final in 4:10.70, the fifth-fastest time of the session, but Luke Hobson fell another spot to 11th. He was the NCAA runner-up last year.
The top seed from the morning, Tomas Koski, was quicker in 4:08.25 in getting second. Jake Magahey, the reigning champion, finished third in 4:08.61, the spot he took at NCAAs last year. Charlie Hawke was fourth and Jake Mitchell fifth. The race featured seven of the top 10 swimmers at NCAAs last year.

Julian Smith took a voyage under 1:40 in the 200 IM, going 1:39.38 to win the event and set the pool record, which he had owned at 1:41.01 from the invitational season. It was enough to unseat both Texas’s Will Modglin, who went 1:40.64 and had led prelims, and two-time reigning champion Baylor Nelson of Texas A&M. Nelson finished fifth in 1:41.43.
Hubert Kos, who was third at NCAAs last year, was in that place at SECs in 1:41.39, .04 up on Danny Schmidt of Auburn. Luca Urlando was sixth.

Sub-18 seconds is, crazy as this sentence sounds, becoming normal for Jordan Crooks. He lowered his meet record of 17.93 from 2022 and his 17.99 from last year by going 17.85 to win the 50 free by a clear half second. That is, a half second over the reigning NCAA champion Josh Liendo, who at 18.35 is no slouch.
Third went to Tennessee’s Gui Caribe in 8.42. Jere Hirbar was fourth in 18.65, .02 ahead of Connor Foote of Texas A&M.
