SEC Championships, Day 3: Josh Liendo Swims 43.06 100 Fly, Ties Second-Fastest Time Ever
In the first men’s race of the SEC Championships, Josh Liendo utilized a sensational 17.58 anchor split to bring Florida to first place and an NCAA/U.S. Open record in the 200 medley relay. Now, Liendo is back in the pool to begin his individual slate. The University of Florida senior clocked 43.26 in prelims to come within a half-second of the fastest time in history, and he went even quicker at night, going 43.06 to tie the second-fastest time in history. He followed that up with a 42-second relay split later in the session.
The 100 fly was one of six individual events contested Thursday evening, along with the women’s equivalent event, the women’s and men’s 400 IM, 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay plus women’s 3-meter diving.
In the team competition, the Texas women moved ahead of Tennessee thanks to a win from Campbell Stoll in the 100 fly and strong depth throughout the schedule. Texas has 718 points, followed by Tennessee (647) and Florida (563.5). For the men, the Longhorns remain in dominant position with 813.5 points, ahead of Florida (703) and Tennessee (585.5). Texas got wins from Baylor Nelson (400 IM), Camden Taylor (200 free) and the 400 medley relay Thursday.

Women’s 100 Butterfly
There is no doubt to the identity of the top female butterflyer in the Southeastern Conference. Campbell Stoll put up a dominant win in the 200 fly Wednesday, and she returned to earn a dramatic triumph in the 100-yard race. Stoll turned in sixth place at the halfway point, 0.35 behind leader Mizuki Hirai, but she came back in 26.43 to power past the field and get to the wall in 50.35. The only swimmers to go faster this season are Stanford’s Torri Huske, Virginia’s Claire Curzan, Indiana’s Miranda Grana, Stanford’s Gigi Johnson and Indiana’s Alex Shackell.
Hirai grabbed second in 50.46. The Tennessee freshman was an Olympic and World Championship finalist in the 100-meter fly, and she has made a quick adjustment to yards competition to boost the Lady Vols, nursing a one-point lead over the Longhorns. Alabama’s Tessa Giele touched third in 50.55, with Texas’ Eva Okaro also under 51 (50.71).

Men’s 100 Butterfly
In hot pursuit of a third consecutive NCAA title in the 100 fly, Josh Liendo might end his college career as the fastest swimmer ever in the event. He threw down a statement performance in the SEC final as he put a scare into the NCAA and U.S. Open records held since 2018 by another University of Florida sprinting great, Caeleb Dressel. Liendo blasted out a 19.95 opening split, four hundredths ahead of Dressel’s record pace. He could not quite maintain that speed down the stretch, but he still hit the wall in 43.06.
That time matched the 43.06 Liendo swam at the 2025 NCAA Championships for the second-fastest mark ever. Liendo also has a 43.07 on his ledger from 2024. Liendo did take down the SEC Championships record of 43.23 from last season. Another two-tenth drop from the conference meet to the national one would put him in range of Dressel’s record.
Second place went to Tennessee’s Gui Caribe in 43.93. The Volunteers’ senior joined Liendo, Ilya Kharun and Luca Urlando as the only swimmers under 44 this season. Urlando ended up third in 44.16 while a second Florida swimmer, Scotty Buff, used some outside smoke to place fourth (44.53).

Women’s 400 IM
The Tennessee women scored a big win as the Lady Vols attempt to hold onto the lead against Texas. Ella Jansen came through in the long medley, pulling clear of the field on the backstroke leg and maintaining a substantial advantage throughout the back half. She ended up winning by almost two seconds in 4:01.97, knocking a half-second off the season-best time she swam in a dual meet last month (4:02.50). Jansen, the B-final winner in the event at the 2025 NCAA Championships, has blossomed into a multi-event contender in her sophomore season.
The battle for second place came down to Emily Brown, another Tennessee swimmer, and Texas’ Angie Coe. Brown was in second place throughout the race, but Coe substantially cut into that edge on breaststroke before pulling ahead at the finish, 4:03.94 to 4:04.07. That effort by Coe combined with further swims throughout the rankings (including sixth-place finisher Campbell Chase) helped the Longhorns pull into a tie in the team standings with 469 points.

Men’s 400 IM
A breakout midseason performance brought Baylor Nelson to the helm of the national standings in the 400 IM with a time of 3:34.83. Nelson backed up that effort at the conference meet as he took down reigning NCAA champion and Texas teammate Rex Maurer in a back-and-forth affair. Maurer had the superior front half, using a strong backstroke leg to open up a lead of more than a second, but Nelson fought back with a sensational 1:00.03 breaststroke split. That gave him a two-second edge, enough to hold off the charging Maurer.
Nelson finished in 3:35.75, just off the SEC meet record Maurer set last season. Maurer came in second at 3:36.74, making him the country’s third-fastest performer this season behind fellow Longhorns Nelson and Cooper Lucas. Well back in third was Georgia’s Drew Hitchcock in 3:39.16, just ahead of Florida’s Gio Linscheer (3:39.36). Lucas ended up sixth in 3:40.50.

Women’s 200 Freestyle
The Texas women have moved into the lead thanks to strong depth, but Tennessee continues to pick up individual wins in impressive fashion. This time, it was Camille Spink coming through in an exciting back-and-forth race with Texas’ Nikolett Padar in the 200 free. Spink trailed by a tenth heading into the final 50 yards, but she split 26.25 to come home on top by four hundredths.
Spink clocked 1:41.71, beating her previous season best by eight tenths. Padar was just behind in 1:41.75 while Georgia’s Kennedi Dobson earned her second top-three finish of the meet with a third-place time of 1:42.20. The Longhorns also picked up fourth and fifth-place points from Erin Gemmell (1:43.11) and Lillie Nesty (1:43.15).

Men’s 200 Freestyle
An extremely tight final in the men’s 200 free saw the top six swimmers finish within four tenths of a second, but it was Texas’ Camden Taylor getting the better of the field with a time of 1:31.53. Taylor had gone 1:31.03 in prelims, which made him the second-fastest swimmer in the country this season. He swam a half-second slower at night, but it was sufficient to take down LSU’s Jere Hribar (1:31.65) and Tennessee’s Koby Bujak-Upton (1:31.67).
Just missing podium finishes were Texas’ Rafael Fente-Damers (1:31.71), Georgia’s Tomas Koski (1:31.75) and Auburn’s Daniel Krichevsky (1:31.87). In the end, the fastest time of the meet belonged to Bujak-Upton, who posted a time of 1:30.77 leading off his team’s 800 free relay Tuesday. That time is doubles as the best in the country.

Women’s 400 Medley Relay
For the second consecutive medley relay, the Tennessee Lady Vols came through for a big win in conference-record time. Tennessee was in a tight duel with Florida for the first 300 yards of the race before Camille Spink, fresh off an individual victory in the 200 free, split 45.72 on the way home to blast the field and give her team the win by two seconds.
Joining Spink on the foursome were the 100 backstroke winner, Jillian Crooks, plus a pair of 100-yard runnerup finishers in McKenzie Siroky (breaststroke) and Mizuki Hirai (butterfly). The team clocked 3:24.58, beating the conference mark set by Florida last season by two tenths.
Second place went to Texas in 3:26.76 as Eva Okaro matched Spink’s freestyle split to mover her team up from fourth place. Emma Kern, Piper Enge and Campbell Stoll swam the first three legs for the Longhorns. Alabama’s Emily Jones, Charlotte Rosendale, Tessa Giele and Cadence Vincent came home third in 3:27.13 while Florida, fueled by Anita Bottazzo splitting 56.54 on breaststroke, ended up fourth in 3:27.69.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay
A powerhouse showdown between Texas and Florida in the final race of the night went to the Longhorns despite the heroics of Gators sprint star Josh Liendo. The key leg for Texas was breaststroke, where Nate Germonprez blasted a 49.02 breaststroke split for the fourth-fastest mark in history. Will Modglin led off for the Longhorns while Hubert Kos handled butterfly duties and Camden Taylor returned to the pool following his 200 free victory to anchor in 40.62.
Texas swam a time of 2:57.64 to win by more than eight tenths over Florida (2:58.49). Jonny Marshall, Koen de Groot, Liendo and Devin Dilger swam for the Gators, and Liendo provided the dynamite with a 42.80 butterfly leg. The split was tied for the fourth-best ever, and Liendo is the only man who has ever been quicker. Earlier in the meet, Marshall, de Groot, Scotty Buff and Liendo recorded the fastest time ever in the 200 medley relay.
Tennessee’s team of Ulises Saravia, Gabe Nunziata, Lucio Paula and Gui Caribe came home third in 3:01.20, with Caribe finishing in 40.84. Auburn took fourth (3:02.09) while fifth-place Georgia got a 43.63 butterfly split from Luca Urlando.
