SEC Championships, Day 1: Jillian Cox, Ahmed Jaouadi Shine in 1650 Free; Tennessee Women Take Down 200 Medley Relay SEC Record
The swimming portion of the SEC Championships began Tuesday in Knoxville, Tenn., with action in the 1650 freestyle, 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay. Highlighting the competition were distance freestyle wins from Texas’ Jillian Cox and Florida’s Ahmed Jaouadi, both of whom stated their claims to be among the national favorites in their respective events. Shortly after, the Florida men blasted the fastest time ever in the 200 medley relay, narrowly missing becoming the first team ever under 1:20.
The Texas women took an early lead in the team competition, largely by virtue of their win in the 800 free relay. The Longhorns have 232 points, followed by Florida (190) and South Carolina (175). Florida currently holds the men’s lead with 274, followed by Tennessee (213) and Texas (190).
Men’s 1-Meter Diving
Tennessee’s Bennett Greene opened the competition with a narrow win in 1-meter diving. Greene scored 400.80 points to beat Texas’ Nick Harris (400.70) by just one-tenth of a point. Missouri’s Collier Dyer was not far away in third place (398.25).

Women’s 1650 Freestyle
The first race of the SEC Championships saw Texas sophomore Jillian Cox reassert her place as the country’s top distance swimmer. Cox swept the 500 and 1650 free national titles last season, and she threw down the top mile time in the country by nine seconds kick off her second conference meet. Cox finished in 15:32.75, about 2.5 seconds off her lifetime best from last year’s SEC meet (15:30.33) that ranks her eighth all-time. No other active college swimmer has ever broken 15:40.
Georgia’s Kennedi Dobson continued her strong freshman campaign with a second-place finish in 15:43.72. That dropped almost four seconds from her previous best time. She remains No. 2 in the country, more than eight seconds clear of third-ranked Claire Weinstein. The only other swimmer to break 16:00 was Cox’s Texas teammate Kate Hurst, who went 15:56.37 for third place and sixth in the national rankings.

Men’s 1650 Freestyle
The Florida men stormed to big points in the 1650 free behind the efforts of two Tunisian swimmers who have both won world titles in the 1500-meter event. At the front of the field was Ahmed Jaouadi, the reigning titlist in the 800 and 1500, with a time of 14:25.14. Jaouadi became the 13th-fastest man ever in the event, but he still sits behind Zalan Sarkany (14:23.85) in the national standings. Sarkany, who competes for Indiana, has captured the past two national titles in the 1650.
Kentucky’s Levi Sandidge took second in 14:30.04, seven tenths ahead of Florida’s Ahmed Hafnaoui (14:30.74). Those swimmers now rank third and fourth in the national standings. Hafnaoui has recently reemerged at Florida after a long stretch away from major competition. Hafnaoui was the Tokyo Olympic champion in the 400 free before winning world titles in the 800 and 1500 free in 2023. This performance represents the best Hafnaoui has posted since that 2023 global meet.
Florida also got fifth-place points from Gio Linscheer (14:46.24) while Kentucky went 2-4 with Carson Hick finishing in 14:39.87.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay
The Tennessee women made a statement that they will be formidable opponents in their home pool this week, ripping off a win in the 200 medley relay by more than eiht tenths. McKenzie Siroky laid down a dynamite breaststroke split and Camille Spink came home in 20.46 to produce a win for the Lady Vols in SEC-record time.
Mizuki Hirai, a newcomer from Japan who joined the team at midseason, handled backstroke duties. Hirai was an Olympic finalist in the 100-meter fly, but she acquitted herself nicely here with a 23.65 leadoff split, second-best in the field behind Alabama’s Emily Jones (23.22). From there, Siroky went 25.84 on breaststroke and Ella Jansen held the field at bay with a 22.85 butterfly leg. Spink then pulled away, achieving a split that only seven other women have ever surpassed.
Tennessee’s final time was 1:32.80, taking down the SEC record of 1:33.29 that Alabama swam in 2022. Also going down was the meet record of 1:33.84 that Texas swam last year. The Lady Vols now rank No. 3 in the country behind Virginia and Louisville.
Alabama placed second in 1:33.63 with Jones, Jada Scott, Tessa Giele and Cadence Vincent while Texas finished well to take third in 1:34.52. Emma Kern, Piper Enge and Campbell Stoll handled the initial legs for the Longhorns before Eva Okaro finished in 20.85.

Women’s 800 Freestyle Relay
The Texas women moved into the country’s leading position in the 800 free relay with a wire-to-wire effort against conferences foes Tuesday evening. Nikolett Padar led off in 1:41.36, a lifetime best by three-quarters of a second and good for the fifth-best mark in the country this year, and no one could ever make up ground on Padar’s teammates. Lillie Nesty clocked 1:42.28 on the second leg, followed by Campbell Chase at 1:44.27 and Erin Gemmell coming home in 1:42.68.
The team’s final time was 6:50.59, a half-second ahead of the previous top time posted by Stanford in November. However, the top time would not last long as both Virginia (6:45.34) and Cal (6:50.15) swam faster at the ACC Championships.
Georgia picked up second place in 6:53.71. Ieva Maluka, Shea Furse and Marie Landreneau led into Kennedi Dobson, who split 1:42.06 on the anchor leg. Tennessee’s Ella Jansen, Emily Armen, Amelia Mason and Emily Brown came in third in 6:54.56, both Jansen and Brown hitting 1:42s on their splits.

Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay
Tennessee posted an early challenge as leadoff swimmer Koby Bujak-Upton led off in 1:30.77, but after that, Texas proved unstoppable in this event. The Longhorns graduated three swimmers from their American-record-setting squad from last year’s NCAA Championships, but Rex Maurer and three newcomers to this team proved plenty solid against conference opposition.
Maurer led off in 1:32.73 before Camden Taylor (1:30.59), Rafael Fente-Damers (1:30.81) and Baylor Nelson (1:32.11) all swam strong splits to deliver Texas a dominant win in 6:06.24, the fastest time in the country this season. Tennessee, with Nikoli Blackman, Gabe Nunziata and Ben Bricca rounding out the squad, placed second in 6:10.31, and Auburn’s Danny Schmidt, Daniel Krichevsky, Warner Russ and Luke Bedsole took third in 6:12.02. Georgia ended up fourth in 6:12.55 as Luca Urlando went 1:32.06 on the second leg.
