Sean Niewold Cracks National Record in 50 Freestyle in Prelims of Dutch Trials
The Dutch Championships have featured several standout performances, and Sean Niewold has played a major role. During Sunday’s prelims of the 50-meter freestyle, Niewold delivered a national record of 21.56. That time bettered the previous Netherlands record, set at 21.56 by Thom de Boer in 2021. Niewold entered the day with a personal best of 21.76 and will look to take the record even lower during the evening finals.
Training at the University of Alabama, Niewold has enjoyed a strong showing at the Dutch Champs. Prior to his record outing in the 50 freestyle, the 24-year-old established a Dutch record in the 50 butterfly, going 22.69. He also won the 100 freestyle while recording a mark of 47.97, good for another career best. Niewold’s prelims time in the 50 freestyle ranks No. 5 in the world for 2026.
Following the final of the 50 freestyle, Niewold will shift his focus to next month’s European Championships in Paris, where he is expected to contest the 50 free, 100 free and 50 fly. The opportunity to race the 100 butterfly might also be an option for the 2024 Olympian.
