Poll: Who Was the Male Breakout Performer of 2025? (VOTE NOW!)

Each year, several athletes elevate their status in the sport. Some make their initial appearance on the international scene. Others continue prior development, and take the next step toward stardom. Whatever the path traveled, we get the chance to identify a handful of breakout performers. The 2025 campaign was no different, with a trio of athletes emerging as the leading contenders for that title.

Before the calendar flipped to 2025, all three candidates were well-known in the sport. But over the past 11-plus months, and particularly in major competition, the triumvirate of Pieter Coetze, Ahmed Jaouadi and Luca Urlando. Each athlete mined gold at the World Championships in Singapore and figure to be major factors when the Olympic Games return to the United States in 2028, held in Los Angeles.

Who had the biggest breakout? Let’s look at the contenders:

Pieter Coetze: The South African medaled in all three backstroke events at the World Champs, highlighted by gold in the 100 distance. Coetze set an African record of 51.85 while winning the event ahead of reigning Olympic champion Thomas Ceccon of Itakly. Coetze was also the silver medalist in the 50 backstroke and 200 backstroke, setting continental records in each event.

Ahmed Jaouadi: The latest Tunisian distance star doubled in the 800 freestyle and 1500 freestyle at the World Championships, capturing each discipline in dominant form. Now training at the University of Florida, Jaouadi clocked 7:36.88 in the 800 free and prevailed in the 1500 free in Singapore behind a performance of 14:34.41.

Luca Urlando: A star for the University of Georgia, the American fulfilled his vast potential in the 200 butterfly by securing a world title in the event. At the World Champs, Urlando fired off a personal-best time of 1:51.87 to become the No. 4 performer in history. The 2024 Olympian also continued to excel on the collegiate scene, setting NCAA and American records in the 200-yard fly.
