PJ Foy Returns as North Carolina Sweeps Queens
PJ Foy returned after missing last season due to injury with a win in the 50 freestyle as North Carolina swept Queens University on Friday.
The men’s team claimed a 149-108 win, while the women prevailed, 156-101.
Foy went 19.65, edging Queens’ Nien Levy by .06 seconds for the win. Foy was also part of the exhibitioned UNC A relay with Sean Setzer, Nate Holm and Martin Kartavi that went 1:17.27 to set the Queens pool record, downing the mark set in 2025 by Virginia Tech by more than a half second. Foy also helped the 200 medley relay win in 1:25.45 (Colin Whelehan, Setzer, Kartavi).
Whelehan won the 100 backstroke in 47.90 and the 200 in 1:45.44. Ben Delmar’s 53.01 edged Setzer in the 100 breaststroke, then went 1:46.19 to dominate the 200 individual medley. Sean Huggins bested Seb Lunak to win the 200 free in 1:38.23.
Freshman Blake Hill claimed the 200 fly in 1:46.61, Josh Parent won the 500 free and Xavier Ruiz claimed the 200 breast.
Queens picked up wins via Akos Horvath in the 1,000 free, TJ Spokas in the 100 free and Emil Harlen in the 100 fly in a 1-2 with teammate Brett Bailey.
In the women’s meet, North Carolina came away with three pool records. Mary Macauley clocked in at 1:57.86 to down the mark in the 200 fly. Lillian Sawyer won the 100 fly in 53.35, and Samantha Armand’s 1:01.34 claimed the 100 breast mark.
Maren Conze paced the Tar Heels with a pair of distance wins, going 10:01.97 in the 1,000 free and 4:51.98. She was also third in the 200 free, with Sawyer second.
Freshmen Kenzie Sellars and Cate Pawlaski notched wins. Sellars went 23.25, .03 up on teammate Eden Goettsch to win the 50 free. Pawlaski edged Armand by a half-second to win the 200 breast in 2:15.61. Macauley also posted the fastest time in the 200 IM at 2:01.51. Tom Mienis did the backstroke double, winning the 100 in 54.98 and the 200 in 1:57.83.
Queens’ Madeline Foster won the 200 free in 1:48.06, and teammate Maren Patterson claimed the 100 free in 50.46. Foster was second in the 100 fly in 54.17.
