Petrak, Abeysinghe Claim 100 Free Titles on Final Day in Cleveland

It was a fast fourth and final day of the 2018 Speedo Sectionals Series – Cleveland in Cleveland, Ohio. The meet, which was held at Cleveland State’s Busbey Natatorium, was co-hosted by the Firestone Akron Swim Team and the Hudson Explores Aquatic Team.

Women’s 1500 Free

Katie Duggan of Club Wolverine added the women’s 1500 free title to her 800 free win from the opening night. She won the event by nine seconds, finishing with a final time of 17:10.33. She also finished second in the 200 free and 400 free in Cleveland.

Second went to Ohio State’s Natalia Jaspeado in 17:19.05 and Club Wolverine’s Annette Dombkowski finished third in 17:33.10.

Men’s 800 Free

Ohio State’s Austin Mortimer used consistent splits to power his way to a win in the men’s 800 free. He dropped over nine seconds from his entry time to stop the clock in 8:27.60.

He was followed by his teammate Carson Burt, who dropped six seconds to take second in 8:29.84. Canton City Schools’ Ethan Banks finished third in 8:31.68.

Women’s 50 Breast

Club Wolverine’s Delaney Duncan completed her breaststroke sweep this weekend with a win in the women’s 50. She sprinted her way to first in 31.12, 1.5 seconds ahead of the competition and three-tenths faster than this morning.

East Grand Rapids’ Riley Kishman took second in 32.79 and Cincinnati Marlins’ Claudia Butterfield finished third in 33.37.

Men’s 50 Breast

Ohio State’s Dominic Harry shaved off a few hundredths of a second from his prelims swim to get his hands to the wall first in tonight’s men’s 50 breast final with a time of 29.27.

Last night’s 100 breast winner Scott Soboleweski of Cincinnati Marlins cruised to second in 29.48 and Lake Shore’s Benjamin Brooks took third in 29.57.

Women’s 200 IM

After posting a trio of top-three finishes earlier this weekend, Hudson Explorer’s Paige McCormick finally found herself on top of the podium in the women’s 200 IM. She was just off her personal best time of 2:20.85 to win the event in 2:21.08.

Her teammate Giovanna Cappabianca secured the runner-up spot in 2:21.48 while Great Lakes’ Portia Brown finished a close third with a new best time of 2:21.64.

Men’s 200 IM

Swimming unattached, Trahern Gribble swam his way to victory in the men’s 200 IM final. He dropped well over two seconds from this morning to post a final time of 2:08.08, a new lifetime best by three seconds.

Greater Toldeo’s Maxwell Rutledge dropped six seconds from his entry time to take second in 2:08.36 and Great Lakes’ Tyler Hong finished third in 2:08.76.

Women’s 100 Free

Ohio State’s Taylor Petrak, who took third in the women’s 50 free, sprinted her way to the top in the 100 free to close out her week of racing. She knocked off almost a second from her morning swim to post a lifetime best of 57.16 during finals.

Liquid Lightning’s Claire Abbasse stopped the clock in 57.66 for second and Ohio State’s Maria Coy swam a time of 58.02, fast enough for third.

Men’s 100 Free

Ohio State’s Matthew Abeysinghe, who also won the men’s 50 fly yesterday, won the last individual race of the weekend. He swam faster than this morning, getting his hand to the wall first in 50.45.

His teammate Ryan Vandermeulen was right on his best time, finishing in 51.87. Christian Bart of East Grand Rapids also made the podium, finishing in a close third with a time of 51.89.

Women’s 4×100 Medley Relay

Club Wolverine’s Claire Young (1:06.60), Duncan (1:10.37), Sydney Thomas (1:05.62) and Stephanie Johnston (58.30) combined to win the women’s 4×100 medley relay with a cumulative time of 4:20.89.

Second went to Ohio State in 4:22.28 and Lake Erie took third in 4:24.07.

Men’s 4×100 Medley Relay

The Ohio State quartet of Colin McDermott (57.65), Alex Jahan, Henrique Painhas and Abeysinghe (50.40) won the meet’s final event in a time of 3:47.39.

Cincinnati Marlins finished second in 3:51.31 while Canton City Schools rounded out the top three in 3:55.51.
