Peter Vanderkaay to be Inducted Into Michigan Sports Hall of Fame
The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame has announced its Class of 2026 and three-time Olympian Peter Vanderkaay is one of the honorees. Vanderkaay attended Rochester Adams High School, where he won three state championships. He then competed for the University of Michigan, where Vanderkaay was a five-time NCAA champion and 14-time gold medalist at the Big Ten Conference Championships.
While representing the United States in international competition, Vanderkaay won four Olympic medals between the 2004 Games in Athens, the 2008 Games in Beijing and the 2012 Games in London. He captured a pair of gold medals in the 800 freestyle relay, was a bronze medalist in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle. At the World Championships, Vanderkaay won four medals.
At the 2006, NCAA Championships, Vanderkaay broke the American record in the 500-yard freestyle while representing the University of Michigan. Vanderkaay was timed in 4:08.60, which broke the 11-year-old record of 4:08.75, set by another Michigan athlete, Tom Dolan. That swim enabled Vanderkaay to repeat as NCAA champ in the event.
Vanderkaay will be inducted during a ceremony on December 17, 2026. The ceremony will take place at the Sound Board Theater, located at the MotorCity Casino Hotel.
